This is certainly true with equine herpesvirus (EHV), an ailment that recently claimed the life of a 10-year-old Westphalian mare in Davidson County, North Carolina. On January 8, the mare fell victim to EHV after initially showing mild symptoms, such as non-suppurative encephalitis. Unfortunately, her condition rapidly went downhill, leading to her euthanasia. The virus is notorious for its contagious nature and rapid progression, as evidenced by the fact that seven other horses in the same facility were exposed before protective measures could be implemented. This incident was reported by the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) through their Health Watch initiative, a testament to the importance of communication and transparency in disease control efforts.Understanding the Virus: EHV-1 and Its Forms
To combat EHV efficiently, it's crucial to understand the different forms the virus can take. The primary culprit in these outbreaks is EHV-1, which can present itself in various syndromes:- Rhinopneumonitis: Typically exhibits as respiratory problems, including fever, cough, and nasal discharge. While often mild in adult horses, it can be severe in younger animals.
- Abortions: In pregnant mares, EHV can cause late-term miscarriages, often without any visible signs beforehand.
- Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM): The neurological form of the virus, marked by symptoms such as incoordination and hind-end weakness. Severe cases may lead to euthanasia.
Prevention and Biosecurity: Playing Defense
Although some vaccines may reduce viral shedding, no existing vaccine provides complete protection against EHM, which makes biosecurity a cornerstone of prevention strategy. Ensuring the well-being of horses involves several critical measures:- Isolate exposed horses for a minimum of 21 days, monitoring them twice daily for any sign of fever, respiratory, or neurological symptoms.
- Prevent the sharing of equipment, personnel, and trailers by using designated barriers and controls.
- In the event of an outbreak, cease all travel, showing, and hauling activities to prevent further spread of the virus.
