Children's Accessories
Children's riding accessories are the small finishing touches that go over – or alongside – your child's everyday riding kit. On this page that mostly means pom-pom hat silks: stretchy covers that pull on over a riding hat to add a splash of colour at the yard. The choices that matter are colour, the one-size stretch fit over your child's hat, and whether their Pony Club or competition rules allow a patterned silk on the day. Just Horse Riders stocks children's accessories from brands including LeMieux and Premier Equine, from around £14.

Fitting a hat silk over a child's riding hat
Both silks on this page are one-size stretch jersey, made to pull snugly over most standard riding hats – children's sizes included. Fit it with the hat off your child's head: stretch the silk over the shell, work the edge under the brim all the way round, and centre the pom at the crown. One thing worth being clear about: a hat silk is decorative. It does not change the protection the hat itself provides, so always start with a correctly fitted riding hat to a current safety standard and treat the silk as the fun part on top.

Frequently asked questions
Will a one-size hat silk fit my child's riding hat?
Usually, yes. Both silks here are stretch jersey designed to fit over most standard riding hats, including children's sizes. On the very smallest hats the fit will be a little looser, but tucking the edge well under the brim keeps it in place. If it does not work on your child's hat, our 90-day returns have you covered.
Does a hat silk affect the safety of the hat?
A hat silk is a decorative cover only – it neither adds to nor takes away from the protection of the hat underneath. The protection comes from the riding hat itself, which should be correctly fitted and meet a current safety standard. If the hat has had a fall or a hard knock, replace the hat, not just the silk.
Can my child wear a pom-pom silk at Pony Club or competitions?
For everyday riding, lessons and most rallies a pom silk is absolutely fine – that is exactly what they are for. Some competitions and formal classes ask for a plain hat or silk, so it is worth a quick check of the rulebook or with the organiser before the day. Many families keep a pom silk for schooling and swap to plain for competing.
