Measuring Your Pony

Rug sizes are in feet and inches, measured from the centre of the chest, along the side, to the point of the buttock. If your pony is between sizes, go up one. Our rug size guide shows how to measure step by step.

How Much Fill?

Native ponies with a full winter coat often need a lighter rug — or none at all — while clipped, older or fine-coated ponies need more fill. Over-rugging can stop a good-doer losing weight over winter, so check for sweating under the rug. The rug weight guide explains 0g to 300g+.

Pony Rugs FAQs

What size rug does a Shetland pony need?

Our smallest pony rugs start at 3'6 (107cm), the Shetland size: the Gallop Equestrian Ponie100 turnout rug, the Hy Equestrian Signature 100g stable rug and the Rhinegold Mini Fly Rug all come in 3'6. Measure from the centre of the chest, along the side, to the point of the buttock, and if your pony is between sizes, go up one. The size filter shows only the rugs in stock in your pony's size.

Does a native pony need a rug in winter?

Often not. A native pony with a full winter coat, shelter and plenty of hay often needs a lighter rug or none at all, and many are comfortable without a rug until it drops below about 5°C. Wet and windy weather makes more difference than dry cold, so a lightweight (about 100g) turnout is often enough on wet days. Slide a hand under the rug behind the withers: damp or hot means go lighter.

What rug weight does a clipped pony need?

A clipped pony has lost its winter coat, so it usually needs about one weight more than an unclipped pony, plus a neck cover once it drops below about 10°C. As a guide for a clipped pony living out: about 150g at 5 to 10°C, about 200g at 0 to 5°C, and 300 to 400g below freezing. Combo rugs with a neck cover, such as the Shires Typhoon 200 Combo, come in pony sizes.
