Choosing a men's riding jacket or gilet

Getting the fit right over a body protector
If you ride in a body protector, decide before you order whether the jacket will go over it. Many men go up one size for a riding jacket worn over a protector – the extra room is needed across the chest and shoulders, not the waist. A gilet in your normal size usually will not close over one, so either size up or wear the gilet underneath your outer layer instead. Riding-cut jackets tend to be longer in the back than high-street equivalents so they cover the gap between jacket and saddle; that length is worth having even if it feels unfamiliar at first.
One jacket for riding and the yard
Most of this collection is deliberately crossover kit: the same waterproof that keeps you dry schooling at seven in the morning also does poo-picking, fencing repairs and the school run. If that is how you will use it, prioritise a waterproof outer with a fleece or gilet underneath rather than one heavy insulated coat – you can shed layers as the day warms up, and a soaked padded jacket takes far longer to dry than a shell. Frequently asked questions
Will a men's riding jacket fit over a body protector?
Usually, if you allow for it. Many riders go up one size when the jacket will be worn over a body protector, as the bulk sits across the chest and shoulders. If you are between sizes, order the larger one – with our 90-day returns it is easy to swap.
What is the difference between a gilet and a bodywarmer?
Nothing meaningful – they are two names for the same sleeveless layer, and equestrian brands use both. Whether padded or fleece, the job is core warmth with free arms for riding and yard work.
Can I wear the same jacket for riding and yard work?
Yes – most jackets in this collection are designed exactly for that. A waterproof riding jacket with a fleece or gilet underneath covers riding, mucking out and everything in between. The exception is tweed and competition jackets, which are best kept for the show ring.
