Tall Riding Boots
Tall (long) riding boots give a smart, close leg contact for dressage, jumping and competition. They come as dress boots (plain, for dressage), field boots (laced at the ankle, for jumping and eventing) and country boots, in leather or easy-care synthetic, and in a range of calf widths and heights. Just Horse Riders stocks over 210 tall boots from Brogini, Shires Moretta, Rhinegold, Hy Equestrian, Premier Equine and Toggi, plus our own-brand Englander Athena from £54.95.

In a hurry? Quick guide:
- Dressage & showing → a plain dress boot
- Jumping & eventing → a laced field boot
- Best value & vegan → Englander Athena (£54.95, standard & wide calf)
- Wide calves → choose a standard & wide fitting (Englander Athena, Shires Moretta)
With tall boots, fit is everything — get the calf width and height right and they'll feel like part of your leg; get them wrong and they'll rub or gape. We've fitted thousands of riders since 2010, so here's how to choose the right pair the first time.

How to choose tall riding boots
How do I measure for tall riding boots?
Take three measurements over the breeches you'll ride in: your usual foot size, the widest part of your calf, and the height from the floor to just below the back of your knee. Calf width is where most people slip up — measure, don't guess. Match all three to the size chart on each product page and you'll get it right first time.
Leather or synthetic?
Leather (Shires Moretta, Brogini, Rhinegold Luxus) softens and looks superb in the show ring but needs conditioning and dislikes prolonged wet. Easy-care synthetics like our Englander Athena are lighter, wipe-clean, vegan and roughly half the price — ideal for everyday schooling. For more detail see our full riding boots guide.
Standard or wide calf?
Most ranges offer more than one calf fitting. If your calf measurement is on the larger side, choose a wide-calf boot rather than sizing up the foot. The Englander Athena and several Shires Moretta styles come in standard and wide options.
Which are the best tall riding boots?
- Best value / synthetic: Englander Athena — £54.95, standard & wide calf, vegan.
- Best leather all-rounder: Shires Moretta and Brogini ranges — quality leather at a sensible price.
- Best for wider calves: Shires Moretta Gianna and the Englander Athena wide-calf fitting.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure for tall riding boots?
Measure over your riding breeches: your foot size, your calf at its widest point, and the height from the floor to just below the back of the knee. Match all three to the product's size chart — calf width is the measurement people most often get wrong.
What's the difference between dress boots and field boots?
Dress boots are plain and stiff for a clean dressage look. Field boots have laces at the ankle that allow more flex, which suits jumping and eventing. Both are tall boots — it's mainly about discipline and ankle flexibility.
Will my new tall boots feel tight at first?
Yes — new tall boots should feel firm, with about an inch of extra height at the back of the knee. They "drop" and soften as they crease in around the ankle, which gives the correct riding fit.
Which tall boots are best for wide calves?
Choose a boot offered in a wide-calf fitting rather than sizing up the foot. The Englander Athena comes in standard and wide calf, and several Shires Moretta styles offer wider options. Always measure the widest part of your calf over your breeches first.
Are synthetic tall boots as good as leather?
For schooling and everyday riding, yes — synthetics like the Englander Athena are lighter, waterproof, wipe-clean, vegan and around half the price. Leather still has the edge for top-level competition and long-term moulding if you maintain it.
