A 50g turnout rug is a waterproof lightweight rug with a thin layer of filling: a touch of warmth on top of rain and wind protection. It sits between a no fill rain sheet and a 100g lightweight, so it suits spring, autumn and fine-coated horses on cool, wet days. We stock around 50 from Horseware Amigo and Rambo, WeatherBeeta, Premier Equine, LeMieux, Gallop, Bucas, Rhinegold and Mackey, from around £35, in standard and combo (full) neck styles.
Is 50g Right For My Horse?
- Only need to keep the wet off? A no fill turnout rug is enough.
- Cool, wet spring or autumn days? 50g adds a little warmth without overheating.
- Chilly nights or a clipped horse? Look at 100g turnout rugs or medium weight turnout rugs.
When Is A 50g Rug The Right Weight?
Fill weight is grams of filling per square metre: more grams, more warmth (not more waterproofing). Our rug weight guide (based on BETA and British Horse Society advice) suggests a lightweight rug when it is wet at 5 to 10°C for an unclipped horse living out, or wet and windy above 10°C for a clipped one. A 50g rug is the gentler end of that: ideal for older or fine-coated horses, or when a no fill sheet is not quite enough. Use the hand check: warm and dry under the rug is right.

50g Turnout Rug FAQs
What temperature is a 50g turnout rug for?
There is no exact number, because it depends on your horse, its coat and the weather. As a guide, a lightweight rug is used when it is wet at around 5 to 10°C for an unclipped horse living out, and a 50g is the lighter end of that range. Rain and wind together chill a horse far more than dry cold, so go a step warmer if the field is exposed.
What is the difference between a 50g and a 100g turnout rug?
Only the amount of filling: 100g has twice as much, so it is warmer. Both are lightweight rugs and both are usually waterproof. Choose 50g for milder days or a horse that runs warm, and 100g for chillier nights.
Do 50g turnout rugs come with a neck cover?
Some do. Combo or full-neck rugs, such as the Gallop Trojan Duraproof 50G Turnout Combo, include a neck cover; standard-neck rugs cover the body only. A combo keeps the neck and mane drier and cleaner in exposed fields.
