A no fill (0g) turnout rug is a waterproof, breathable shell with no padding inside: it keeps a horse dry and out of the wind and mud without adding warmth. Riders also call them rain sheets or 0g rugs. We stock around 75 from Horseware (Amigo, Rhino and Rambo), WeatherBeeta, Premier Equine, LeMieux, John Whitaker, Gallop, StormX, Bucas and more, from around £32, plus matching 0g neck covers and hoods.
Is No Fill Right For My Horse?
- Mild but wet or windy? A no fill rug keeps the coat dry so your horse can stay warm on its own.
- Cooler nights coming? Step up to 50g turnout rugs or 100g turnout rugs.
- Want one rug all year? Many no fill rugs take a rug liner underneath for colder days: check the product description.
When Is A No Fill Rug The Right Weight?
Choose no fill when your horse needs keeping dry rather than keeping warm: mild, wet or windy days, a muddy field, or a horse that sweats in anything heavier. Our rug weight guide (based on BETA and British Horse Society advice) suggests many healthy, unclipped horses with shelter and hay need no rug at all above about 10°C, and a no fill sheet is a common choice for a clipped horse in the stable above 10°C. A clipped horse usually needs about one weight more once it turns cold.

No Fill Turnout Rug FAQs
Is a no fill turnout rug waterproof?
Most are waterproof and breathable: the outer shell does the waterproofing, not the filling. A few budget rain sheets, such as the Tyro Zero, are showerproof rather than fully waterproof, so check the product description if your horse lives out in heavy rain. Re-proofing every so often keeps any rug waterproof for longer.
What is the difference between a no fill rug and a fly rug?
A no fill turnout rug has a waterproof outer for rain and wind. A fly rug is a light mesh that protects against flies and sun and is usually not waterproof. Some combination rugs do both, but for wet weather choose a turnout rug.
Can I put a liner under a no fill turnout rug?
Often, yes. Ranges such as Horseware Amigo and Rhino and WeatherBeeta ComFiTec are made to take a matching liner, which turns a 0g rug into a warmer one on cold days. Check that the liner fits the rug's brand and size.
