A 100g turnout rug is the classic lightweight: a waterproof, breathable rug with enough filling to take the edge off cool, wet and windy weather. It is the warmest of the lightweights, one step below a medium weight (150 to 250g). We stock around 60 from Horseware Amigo, Rhino and Rambo, Premier Equine, WeatherBeeta, LeMieux, John Whitaker, Gallop, Rhinegold, Mackey and StormX, from around £38, in standard and combo neck styles.

Is 100g Right For My Horse?

  • Mild days, just wet? A no fill rug or a 50g rug may be plenty.
  • Wet and windy, temperature dropping? 100g is the usual lightweight for that.
  • Clipped, or below about 5°C? Most horses will need medium weight turnout rugs.

When Is A 100g Rug The Right Weight?

Our rug weight guide (based on BETA and British Horse Society advice) suggests a lightweight of about 100g for an unclipped horse living out when it is wet at 5 to 10°C, or for a clipped horse when it is wet and windy above 10°C. Below that, a clipped horse usually needs a medium weight with a neck cover. Older, young, thin-coated or underweight horses may need more; hardy natives with shelter and hay often need less. Slide a hand under the rug behind the withers: warm and dry is right.

100g Turnout Rug FAQs

Is a 100g turnout rug lightweight or medium weight?

Lightweight. Lightweight rugs run from about 50 to 100g of filling, medium weights from about 150 to 250g, and heavyweights from 300g. A 100g rug is the warmest lightweight, so it is a good bridge between autumn and winter.

What temperature is a 100g turnout rug for?

As a guide, around 5 to 10°C when it is wet for an unclipped horse living out, or above 10°C when it is wet and windy for a clipped horse. Every horse is different, so use the hand check under the rug and adjust.

Can I use a 100g rug with a liner?

Many 100g rugs, including Horseware Amigo and Rhino, are made to take a matching liner, turning them into a warmer rug for cold snaps. Check that the liner suits the rug's brand and size before buying.
