Horse Rug Liners
Which rug liner do you need?
A rug liner adds warmth inside the rug your horse already wears, so one good turnout can cover the whole year. Pick the liner by the warmth you want to add: 50g or 100g for a chilly night, 200g to turn a lightweight turnout into roughly a mediumweight, and 300g to 400g for proper winter weather on a clipped horse. This collection holds 47 rug liners from Horseware, Premier Equine, LeMieux, Weatherbeeta, Bucas, Shires Tempest, StormX and DefenceX, 44 of them in stock, with insulated liners from £36.00.

What is a rug liner and why use one?
A liner is an extra insulating layer that goes inside a turnout or stable rug rather than over the top of it. Instead of owning a lightweight, a mediumweight and a heavyweight turnout, you own one good outer rug and change the liner underneath as the weather changes. The outer rug keeps doing the waterproofing and the wear; the liner does the warmth.
The practical wins are storage and washing. Three turnout rugs take up a lot of tack-room space and are heavy, awkward things to clean. A liner is light, packs down small and washes easily. When the weather swings mid-week, you add or remove a layer rather than swapping the whole rug.
How much warmth does each gram weight add?
The gram figure is the fill weight, and it adds to whatever your outer rug already gives you. As a rough guide: 50g to 100g adds a light lift for a chilly night, 200g takes a lightweight turnout to roughly mediumweight, 300g gets you into proper winter territory, and 350g to 400g is for clipped horses in genuinely cold, still conditions. Watch your horse rather than the thermometer: warm ears and a dry, relaxed coat under the rug mean you have it about right, and sweat under the shoulders means you have gone too heavy.
Will a liner fit the rug you already own?
Liners attach inside the outer rug, and the attachment points, cut and neck shape differ between brands and ranges. Many are designed for the same brand's rugs: for example, the Horseware Rambo Optimo liners are built for the Optimo rug system and the Horseware XL liners for Horseware's longer-cut rugs. Before you order, check the product page to see which rugs a liner is made for.

What size rug liner do you need?
Take the same size as your outer rug. Liners use the standard UK rug measurement, from the centre of the chest, along the horse's side, to the point of the buttock, in feet and inches. They are cut to sit inside a rug of the matching size, so sizing up "to be safe" causes bunching rather than extra warmth.
In this collection, pony liners are in stock from 3ft 9 (Horseware Pony Liner 100G and 300G) and the biggest sizes reach 7ft 6 (Horseware XL Liner 100G and 200G).
How do you wash a rug liner?
Brush off loose hair and dried mud first, then follow the care label on your liner. As a general rule, use a cool, gentle wash with a rug wash or a plain non-biological detergent, skip the fabric conditioner, and let it dry naturally: heat can flatten the fill, and flattened fill is warmth you have lost. Make sure it is completely dry before it goes back inside a rug, or you will trap damp against the horse.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use two liners at once?
It is better to move up a gram weight than to double up. Two liners inside one rug tend to shift against each other, bunch at the shoulder and rub. If a 200g liner is not enough on the coldest nights, step up to a 300g or 400g liner instead.
What is the cheapest insulated rug liner here?
The Shires Tempest Original WarmaRug 50 Turnout Rug Liner at £36.00, followed by the StormX Empra 200G Liner Rug at £38.77 and the DefenceX Shield 200G Liner Rug With Detachable Neck at £46.38.
Do you need a liner if you already own a heavyweight turnout?
Not for the coldest weather, but a liner fills the gap either side of it. A lightweight turnout plus a 100g or 200g liner covers the in-between days that are too cold for a lightweight on its own and too mild for a heavyweight, and gives you something to take out on a mild afternoon.
What is a combo liner?
A combo liner has a neck section as well as the body, so it adds warmth to the neck too. In this collection the Premier Equine Combo Horse Rug Liners come in 100g (£84.60), 200g (£88.20) and 350g (£91.80), and the DefenceX Shield 200G Liner Rug comes with a detachable neck (£46.38).
Which liner suits a clipped horse living out?
A clipped horse loses heat fast in wind and wet, so a 300g to 400g fill under a good waterproof turnout is the usual answer, such as the Shires Tempest Original WarmaRug 300 Turnout Rug Liner (£46.80), the Premier Equine 350g Horse Rug Liner (£66.60) or the Horseware Liner 400G (£95.95). Check under the rug daily and drop a weight if your horse is sweating.
Do you have rug liners for ponies?
Yes. The Horseware Pony Liner comes in 100g (£55.95), 200g (£59.95) and 300g (£64.95), with sizes in stock from 3ft 9. The Weatherbeeta Comfitec Liner 100G is in stock from 4ft 0, and several others start at 4ft 9 or 5ft 0, including the LeMieux Kudos range, the StormX Empra and the Premier Equine liners.
