Which type of dog coat should you choose?

What size dog coat does my dog need?

Dog coats are sized by back length: the distance from the base of the neck, where the collar sits, to the base of the tail. Measure your dog standing square, then match that figure to the size on the label. Coats here are labelled two ways. What if my dog is between sizes?

Go up rather than down. A coat that is slightly long is far more comfortable than one that pulls across the chest or rides back over the shoulders. Deep-chested breeds such as greyhounds and lurchers usually need the girth checked as well as the back length; barrel-chested breeds like pugs and bulldogs often need the larger size for chest room even when their back is short.

Waterproof or fleece — which one do you actually need?

A waterproof is an outer shell. It keeps rain and mud off the coat underneath and blocks wind, which is what most dogs feel first on a cold day. A fleece, such as the Weatherbeeta Comfitec Fleece Zip Dog Coat from £9.62, is a warmth layer: brilliant for cold dry days, for drying a wet dog in the car or kennel, and for wearing under a shell when the temperature really drops. Older dogs, very young puppies, small breeds close to cold ground, and dogs recovering from illness or clipping also tend to feel the cold more. Double-coated northern breeds often need nothing at all in British winters, and can overheat if over-dressed.
