A child's riding hat has to fit properly to protect them, so measure their head and check the fit before every ride. We stock children's hats, helmets and skull caps from Karben, Gatehouse, Champion, Uvex, John Whitaker and HKM. Each product page gives the safety standards that hat is certified to.
How To Fit A Child's Hat
- Measure: around the head just above the eyebrows, and use that to find the size.
- Try it on: it should sit level, feel snug all round and not rock when they shake their head.
- Fasten the harness: do it up every time, and re-check the fit as they grow.

Kids Riding Hat FAQs
What is the difference between a skull cap and a riding hat?
A skull cap has no fixed peak and is usually worn with a silk, while a riding hat has a built-in peak. Both have to meet the safety standard your club or competition asks for.
Which safety standard does my child need?
It depends on where they ride. Pony Club, riding schools and competitions each set their own hat rules, so check with them. The product page shows which standards each hat is certified to.
When should a child's riding hat be replaced?
Replace it after any fall or knock, even if it looks fine, and when it no longer fits. If you are not sure whether a hat is still safe, replace it.
Advice from the Just Horse Riders team. A hat only protects properly if it fits, so check it before every ride.
