What do the rug weights actually mean?
The number on a rug is the grams of fill per square metre. It is a guide to warmth, not a temperature rating, and the right choice depends just as much on your horse's clip, age, condition, breed and how sheltered the field is.
0g and 50g
No fill or a very light fill. A 0g turnout is a rain sheet: it keeps the wet and wind off without adding warmth, which suits mild days, clipped horses in work, or good-doers who run warm.
100g
The everyday British autumn and spring weight. Useful when it is cold enough that a horse looks tucked up in a rain sheet but too mild for a heavyweight.
200g and 300g
Mediumweight and heavyweight winter options for clipped horses, older horses, or those living out through hard weather. A combo version adds a fixed or detachable neck cover for extra coverage.
How do I measure my horse for a StormX rug?
UK rugs are sized in feet and inches. Stand your horse square, then measure from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the rear at roughly the edge of the tail. Round up to the nearest 3in size if you land between two, and check the fit at the shoulder and along the spine before you leave the rug on unsupervised. A rug that pulls across the chest or slips back is more likely to rub.
Combo or standard: do I need a neck cover?
A combo (or "combi") rug has the neck built in or attached, which keeps rain off the crest and stops water running down under the rug. It suits clipped horses, horses with a full or hunter clip, and exposed fields. A standard rug with an open neck is easier to fit and often more comfortable for horses that are fussy about neck covers. Several rugs in this collection, such as the DefenceX System turnout rugs, use a detachable neck so you can run either setup from the same rug.
Which rug helps with flies and sweet itch?
Fly rugs work as a physical barrier: a fine mesh weave that flies and midges struggle to bite through, usually with belly and tail flaps. Bold striped patterns like the StormX Original Zebra Print Fly Rug are popular for the same reason. For horses that react badly to midge bites, a close-fitting sweet itch design such as the Stormx Original Sweet Itch Zebra Rug gives fuller coverage of the neck, belly and tail.
A rug can support a midge-management routine and help reduce bites, but it is not a treatment. If your horse is itching, rubbing raw patches, or has broken or infected skin, speak to your vet first and treat the rug as one part of the plan alongside their advice.
What about after work: coolers, fleeces and cotton sheets?
A wet horse in a waterproof rug stays wet. Coolers, fleeces and cotton sheets wick moisture away so a horse dries off without getting chilled. The Stormx Empra Pima Cotton Sheet suits travelling and show days; a fleece works well for the walk back from the arena; and the StormX Original Fleece Exercise Sheet keeps a horse's back warm during warm-up on cold mornings.
StormX rug questions, answered
What size StormX rug does my horse need?
Measure from the centre of the chest, along the horse's side, to the point of the rear near the edge of the tail, and match that measurement to the rug size in feet and inches. If you fall between sizes, go up rather than down, then check the rug does not pull across the shoulders. Sizes in this collection run from about 3ft 0 for small ponies up to 7ft 3 on the larger turnout rugs.
Is a 0g turnout rug warm enough for winter?
On its own, no. A 0g rug such as the StormX Original 0 Turnout Rug (from £43.31) is a rain sheet: it blocks wind and rain but adds no insulation. For cold weather choose a filled rug, or layer a liner underneath if the rug is cut with enough room. Unclipped natives in a sheltered field often need far less rug than a clipped horse in an exposed one.
Can a fly rug help a horse with sweet itch?
A close-fitting sweet itch rug like the Stormx Original Sweet Itch Zebra Rug (from £46.38) helps by covering the neck, belly and tail so biting midges have far less skin to land on, which supports a wider management routine. It does not treat or cure the condition. If your horse is rubbing, sore or has broken skin, ask your vet for a diagnosis and treatment plan before relying on a rug alone.
Are StormX turnout rugs waterproof and breathable?
StormX turnout rugs use a waterproof, breathable outer so rain stays out while moisture and body heat can escape. Stable rugs, coolers, fleeces and cotton sheets are not waterproof and are designed for indoor use, travelling or drying a horse off. Check the individual product page for the exact specification of the rug you are looking at, including the denier of the outer and whether a neck cover is included.
How do I wash and reproof a turnout rug?
Brush off dried mud first, fasten all the straps so they cannot catch, and follow the care label on the rug. Ordinary detergent and fabric softener can clog the waterproof coating, so use a technical wash made for outdoor fabrics, then reproof with a suitable wash-in or spray-on product. Many owners send heavyweights to a specialist rug cleaner at the end of the season instead.
Can I use a stable rug for turnout?
No. Stable rugs are not waterproof and the outer fabric is not built for field use, so it soaks through and tears easily. If you need warmth outdoors, use a filled turnout rug such as the StormX Original 200 Combi Turnout Rug (from £77.84), or a turnout with a liner system. Keep stable rugs for the box, and coolers and cotton sheets for travelling and drying off.
