- Cool, changeable weather → medium turnout — ComFiTec Plus Dynamic II Standard Neck Medium/Lite (£58.70)

Weatherbeeta is one of the most trusted names in horse rugs, and the ComFiTec line is where most riders start. The naming looks complicated at first, but it comes down to three things: how warm the rug is (the fill), whether it covers the neck (standard vs combo), and how tough the outer is (the denier). Get those three right for your horse and your weather, and the rest is just picking a size. This guide walks you through each one.
Which Weatherbeeta rug do I need?
Match the rug to the bulk of your horse's weather. Rug weights are a guide, not a rule — a clipped, older or fine-coated horse feels the cold more than a native pony living out, so adjust up or down and check your horse isn't sweating underneath.
| Rug weight | Rough temperature | Best for | From our range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lite / no fill | Around 10–15°C+ | Rain cover, mild days, unclipped horses | ComFiTec Essential Standard Neck Lite Plus (£30.21) |
| Medium | Around 0–10°C | Cool, changeable UK weather | ComFiTec Plus Dynamic II Standard Neck Medium/Lite (£58.70) |
| Heavyweight | Below roughly 5°C | Cold winter nights, clipped & older horses | ComFiTec Essential Combo Neck Heavy (from £43.99); ComFiTec Classic Combo Neck Heavy (£58.70) |
| Liner (layer up) | Adds warmth to any rug | Boosting an existing turnout as it gets colder | ComFiTec Liner 50G (£49.99); Thermi-Heat Liner 100G (£69.99) |
Standard neck or combo neck?
This is the choice riders ask us about most. A standard neck rug finishes at the withers and pairs with a separate neck cover if you want one. A combo neck rug has the neck cover built in as one piece — more coverage against wind and rain, and nothing to buy separately.
| Standard neck | Combo neck | |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Body only | Body plus neck |
| Best for | Milder weather, horses with a shelter | Exposed fields, clipped necks, cold & wet |
| Flexibility | Add a neck cover later if needed | All-in-one, nothing extra to fit |
If your horse lives out in an exposed field or is clipped up the neck, a combo is usually worth it. If they have a stable or field shelter and a full mane, a standard neck is often plenty.
How do I measure my horse for a Weatherbeeta rug?
Weatherbeeta rugs are sized in feet and inches (4ft 0 up to 7ft 3 in this collection). Measure your horse in a straight line from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock (roughly where the tail begins). Convert that measurement to the nearest rug size — if you fall between two sizes, size up rather than down so the rug isn't tight over the shoulders. A well-fitting rug sits in front of the withers, covers to the top of the tail, and lets your horse graze and move without slipping.
Are Weatherbeeta ComFiTec rugs waterproof?
Yes — ComFiTec turnout rugs are designed to be waterproof and breathable, with a repel outer shell that keeps rain out while letting body moisture escape, so your horse stays dry without getting clammy underneath. Toughness is shown by the denier in the name: a higher denier (for example 1200D) means a more abrasion-resistant outer for horses who are hard on their rugs, while a lower denier is lighter and softer. Whichever you choose, reproofing the outer once or twice a season keeps the water repellency working.
What about summer, fly and cooler rugs?
The ComFiTec range isn't just for winter. Alongside turnouts you'll find breathable mesh fly rugs and sweet-itch styles designed to help protect against midge and fly bites, cooler and wicking rugs for drying a hot horse after work, and matching neck covers, liners and fly masks to complete the set. Availability across summer lines changes with the season, so browse the collection to see what's in stock right now.
Frequently asked questions
Are Weatherbeeta ComFiTec rugs waterproof?
Yes. ComFiTec turnout rugs use a waterproof, breathable outer with a repel shell coating that keeps rain out while allowing sweat and body moisture to escape. Reproof the outer once or twice a season to keep the water repellency at its best, especially on rugs that see heavy daily wear.
What weight turnout rug does my horse need?
As a rough guide: a lite or no-fill rug suits mild days around 10–15°C, a medium rug suits cool weather around 0–10°C, and a heavyweight suits cold nights below roughly 5°C. This depends on the individual horse — a clipped, older or fine-coated horse needs more warmth than an unclipped native. Check under the rug regularly: if your horse is warm and dry at the shoulder and not sweating, the weight is right.
How do I measure my horse for a Weatherbeeta rug?
Measure in a straight line from the centre of the chest, along the body, to the point of the buttock, then match that to the nearest rug size in feet and inches. This collection runs from 4ft 0 to 7ft 3. If you're between two sizes, size up so the rug isn't tight across the shoulders. If you're unsure, just ask our team.
What's the difference between a standard neck and a combo neck rug?
A standard neck rug covers the body only and finishes at the withers, so you can add a separate neck cover if needed. A combo neck rug has the neck cover built in as one piece, giving more protection against wind and rain. Combo rugs suit clipped horses and exposed fields; standard neck rugs suit milder weather or horses with a shelter.
Can a Weatherbeeta rug help with sweet itch?
Weatherbeeta makes fine-mesh sweet-itch and fly rugs designed to help protect against midge and fly bites by covering the areas horses are usually bitten. A rug can be a useful part of managing sweet itch, but it isn't a cure — for a horse with a diagnosed skin condition, speak to your vet about a full management plan alongside physical protection.
How do I wash and care for my Weatherbeeta rug?
Brush off dry mud, then clean with cool or lukewarm water and a specialist rug wash rather than household detergent, which can strip the waterproofing. Let the rug dry fully, then reproof the outer to restore water repellency. Store it clean and dry over summer. How often you wash depends on use, but most turnout rugs benefit from a proper clean and reproof at the end of each season.
