Horse Swaps Teams for a Shot at Glory: A Tale of Sporting Strategy

The equestrian community is abuzz as one talented horse makes an unconventional journey from Britain to Australia in the hope of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Shadow Man, a familiar name in British eventing and showjumping, has joined forces with Australian Chris Burton in a bid for Olympic selection.

A Champion in the Making

Shadow Man, a 14-year-old horse, has had a notable career on British soil. Under the expert guidance of Ben Hobday, he became the British novice champion at the Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing in 2017. The talented pair won further accolades, finishing 10th in the seven-year-old World Championship at Le Lion. In 2019, they secured four top-five placings at four-star level and were declared British national champions.

Crossing the Sea for Olympic Dreams

As part of the new strategy, Chris Burton, who won a bronze medal in eventing at the Rio Olympics, will ride Shadow Man for the next six months. However, this move wasn't the first thought on the mind of Hobday, Shadow Man's original handler.

With the horse recovering from an injury in 2022 and a field of talented British riders and horses slated for the Paris Olympics, Hobday had to ponder whether it was a wise decision to let Shadow Man compete under another rider. After careful thought, it seemed like the best option to give Shadow Man his fair chance at Olympic glory.

Positive Beginnings

The duo made their debut together at Montelibretti, Italy, on March 3, where they achieved a double jumping clear in the CCI3*-S, despite some cross-country time-penalties. Chris Burton, who's had an admiring eye on Shadow Man for some time, was pleased to experience the horse's exceptional skills first-hand.

The Path Ahead: A Unique Challenge

Chris Burton's ambitious plan is not just limited to eventing. He hopes to qualify for the Paris Olympics in the showjumping discipline as well. Burton already has a place sealed in this category, thanks to his 12-year-old mare Chedington Hazy Toulana. He is also eyeing Paris selection with Jacksonville Eurohill, a 10-year-old gelding.

This presents a unique challenge, as Burton aims to feature in two equestrian disciplines simultaneously. But the Australian sportsman seems up for the task and is ardent in his commitment to this daunting yet exciting pursuit.

As for Shadow Man, once his journey with Chris Burton concludes, he will venture back home. If all goes to plan, he'll be shining under the spotlight of international acclaim, well-prepared for the next chapter in his sporting career.
