Stable Neck Covers
Stable neck covers are add-on neck pieces that clip or attach to a matching stable or turnout rug, extending warmth and protection from the withers up over the crest, throat and top of the neck. You choose one to suit the rug you already own — matching the brand, attachment system and fill weight (measured in grams, e.g. 50g, 100g, 200g) so the two work as a set. Just Horse Riders stocks around 90 stable neck covers and rugs-with-neck from brands including Rhinegold, Shires, Gallop Equestrian, Premier Equine, Weatherbeeta and LeMieux, with prices from £15.63.

What is a stable neck cover and when do you need one?
A stable neck cover is a separate neck piece that adds coverage from the withers up over the crest and throat, where a standard rug stops. It clips, zips or straps onto a matching rug so warmth carries the whole way up the neck. Most riders add one for clipped horses, older horses, hard keepers, or through the coldest, wettest weeks when a rug alone leaves the neck exposed. If your horse holds condition well and lives out with shelter, a rug without a neck may be plenty.
How do you match a neck cover to your rug?
Neck covers are rarely one-size-fits-all across brands, because each maker uses its own clips, loops and zip positions. Match on three things and you will not go far wrong: the brand and range, the attachment system (poppers, toggles, zip or hook-and-loop), and the fill weight in grams so the neck matches the warmth of the body rug. If in doubt, buy the neck cover from the same range as your rug, or choose a "universal" style designed to fit that brand's rugs.
Which neck cover for which rug? A quick guide
| If your rug is… | Look for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Any Rhinegold rug | Universal-fit neck with anti-rub mane panel | Rhinegold Universal Neck Cover — from £22.27 |
| Shires Highlander turnout | Same range, matched fill (50/100/200/300g) | Highlander Original 100 Neck Cover — from £26.09 |
| Lightweight stable rug | Low-fill (50g) stable neck | Gallop Trojan 50G Stable Neck Cover — from £20.77 |
| Pony or small horse rug | Pony-cut neck in a matching fill | Gallop Ponie 50G Stable Neck Cover — from £18.16 |
| Premium stable/turnout rug | Same-brand rug supplied with its own neck | LeMieux Arika Stable-Tek Neck 100g — from £36.95 |
Weights and fits are a guide only. Coat, clip and how much shelter your horse has all change what is comfortable, so use the fill grams as a starting point rather than a fixed rule.

Do you sell full rugs with a neck already attached?
Yes. If you would rather buy a rug and neck as one set, browse our stable combo rugs (rug plus neck in one), or choose a rug and add a matching neck separately from our standard-neck stable rugs. For the full rug range, see all stable rugs.
How do you look after a stable neck cover?
Shake off loose dirt and let it dry naturally before storing; most covers can be sponged clean or cool-washed and re-proofed following the maker's care label. Check clips, zips and stitching regularly, especially where the neck joins the rug, as this is where strain shows first. Store fully dry to keep fillings lofty and prevent mildew over the summer months.
Frequently asked questions
Will any neck cover fit my rug?
Not always. Neck covers attach with brand-specific clips, toggles or zips, so the safest match is a neck from the same brand and range as your rug, or a "universal" cover designed to fit that brand's rugs. Match the fill weight too so the neck is as warm as the body.
What fill weight should a stable neck cover be?
As a starting point, match the neck to the fill of your rug — a 50g rug pairs with a 50g neck, a 200g rug with a 200g neck. Coat, clip and shelter all matter, so treat the grams as a guide. If your horse feels the cold or is fully clipped, a warmer neck can help; if in doubt, ask your instructor or a rug fitter.
Does my horse actually need a neck cover?
A neck cover helps clipped horses, older horses and poor doers stay warmer, and adds waterproofing over the crest in wet weather. A horse that holds condition well with good shelter may not need one. Because rugging depends on your horse's health and living set-up, check with your vet or an experienced yard manager if you are unsure.
How much do stable neck covers cost at Just Horse Riders?
Standalone stable neck covers currently start from around £15.63, with most everyday options between roughly £18 and £37 depending on brand and fill. Full rugs supplied with a neck cover cost more. Check the individual product pages for the current price and available sizes.
Can I get a neck cover to fit a pony?
Yes. Pony-cut necks such as the Gallop Equestrian Ponie range are shaped for smaller natives and youngsters so they get full coverage without excess fabric. As with any rug, pair the neck with a pony rug of matching brand and fill.
What are your delivery and returns terms?
