When should I use a lightweight stable rug?
A lightweight stable rug (0–100g fill) is a warmth rug for indoor use, not a waterproof one — never use it out in the rain. Reach for one when:
- The stable is cool but not freezing — typical early-autumn and spring nights.
- Your horse is unclipped or lightly clipped and still holds some coat.
- You want to take the edge off overnight without your horse sweating.
- You need a layer to add under a heavier rug when a cold snap arrives (see below).
Weight is always a guide, not a rule: a clipped or fine-coated horse feels the cold far more than a hairy native standing in the same barn.
Can I layer a lightweight rug under a heavier one?
Yes — layering is one of the most useful things a lightweight stable rug does. Rather than buying a rug for every temperature, many owners keep one lightweight rug and add it underneath a medium or heavyweight rug when the weather turns bitter, then remove it as things warm up. How do I measure my horse for a stable rug?
UK rugs are sized in feet and inches (for example 5'9", 6'0", 6'3"). Using a soft tape, measure in inches from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock at the rear (roughly where the tail meets the body). Match that measurement to the nearest UK rug size. If your horse falls between sizes, or is broad across the shoulder, size up. As a rough guide, pony sizes run about 4'0"–5'3" and horses 5'6"–7'0".
