Which Horseware cooler or fleece should you buy?

For most horses the answer is a jersey or fleece cooler in the £51.95–£59.95 band: the Horseware Amigo Jersey Cooler (£59.95) or Horseware Amigo Fleece Cooler (£55.95) will dry a warm horse after work, keep them cosy in the stable and travel well, which covers almost everything a cooler is asked to do. If your horse comes in genuinely wet and steaming after fast work, step up to the open-weave Horseware Amigo Net Cooler (£51.95) or Horseware Rambo Techni Waffle Cooler (£59.95), which move moisture away faster. If you want one rug that looks smart at a show and still works at home, the Horseware Newmarket Fleece Cooler (£95.95) is the classic choice. This collection holds 17 Horseware coolers and fleeces, from £42.95.

What is the difference between a cooler and a fleece?

In everyday yard language the two words overlap, and Horseware uses both. A cooler is designed to sit on a warm, damp horse and let moisture pass out through the fabric so the horse dries off without getting chilled. A fleece is a warmer, denser knit that is more about holding heat – a stable layer, a travel layer, or something to throw on at a show. Plenty of rugs do both jobs: the Horseware Amigo Fleece Cooler and Horseware Newmarket Fleece Cooler are fleeces that also wick, which is why they are the ones most people end up reaching for.

The practical difference shows up when a horse is really sweating. A dense fleece on a soaking horse can trap damp against the coat. That is where the open structures come in – the Horseware Amigo Net Cooler (£51.95), the Horseware Rambo Techni Waffle Cooler (£59.95) and the Horseware Rambo Airmax Cooler (£86.95) all let air and moisture move much more freely.

Which one for after a hard schooling session?

A net or waffle-weave cooler first, while the horse is genuinely wet. Once the coat is only slightly damp, swap to a fleece such as the Horseware Amigo Fleece Cooler (£55.95) to hold warmth while the horse finishes drying. Competition riders who want one rug that does the whole job often choose the Horseware Signature Sport Cooler (£99.95), stocked right through 5ft 6 to 7ft 3.

Which one for travelling?

Fleece, almost always. Lorries are warm and draughty at the same time, and a fleece such as the Horseware Newmarket Fleece Cooler (£95.95) or the Horseware Signature Travel Cooler (£138.95) is easy to put on, easy to take off at the other end and does not need surcingles fiddled with in a hurry. For a pony, the Horseware Amigo Jersey Pony Cooler (£51.95) or Horseware Newmarket Pony Fleece Cooler (£86.95) are the direct equivalents.

Do you need a hood as well?

Only if your horse sweats heavily up the neck, which clipped horses in hard work often do. Two routes: buy a cooler with the neck built in, such as the Horseware Amigo Jersey Integrated Cooler (£69.95), or add the Horseware Ionic Therapy Mesh Cooler Hood (£42.95) in Small, Medium, Large or X-Large. An integrated design means nothing to lose or mismatch; a separate hood means you can leave it off on milder days.

What size Horseware cooler do you need?

Horseware coolers use the standard UK rug measurement – the distance from the centre of the chest, along the side of the horse, to the point of the buttock, in feet and inches. Measure over the shoulder rather than round it, and keep the tape level. Coolers are cut generously and are usually taken in the same size as your turnout rug.

If you are between sizes, go up. A cooler is not a fitted rug and a little extra length is more forgiving than a tight one across the chest. Pony owners have the Horseware Newmarket Petite Fleece Cooler from 2ft 6 for the smallest ponies and youngstock, then the pony coolers running 3ft 9 all the way to 5ft 9 – which overlaps with horse sizing, since that starts at 5ft 0 with the Horseware Rambo Airmax Cooler and 5ft 6 across most of the range. If your pony measures 5ft 0 or 5ft 3, check both the pony and the horse rugs before you decide.

How do you wash a Horseware fleece cooler?

Brush the dry mud and hair off first – that alone does most of the work. Then a cool machine wash on a gentle cycle with a rug wash or a plain non-biological detergent. Skip fabric conditioner, which coats the fibres and makes a cooler noticeably worse at moving moisture, and skip the tumble dryer. Hang it over a rail or a stable door and it will be dry quickly, because that is exactly what the fabric is designed to do.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Horseware cooler be left on overnight?

Yes, a fleece cooler such as the Horseware Amigo Fleece Cooler (£55.95) or Horseware Thermal Cooler (£109.95) is perfectly suitable as an overnight stable layer, provided the horse is dry by the time you leave. Check the fit and the surcingles before you go. If the horse is still damp, a fleece left on all night can hold that moisture against the coat – dry them off in an open-weave cooler first, then change rugs.

What is the cheapest Horseware cooler here?

The Horseware Ionic Therapy Mesh Cooler Hood is the lowest priced item at £42.95, but that is a hood rather than a full rug. For a complete cooler, the Horseware Amigo Net Cooler and the Horseware Amigo Jersey Pony Cooler both start at £51.95, followed by the Horseware Amigo Fleece Cooler at £55.95.

Are Amigo, Rambo and Newmarket different quality levels?

They are different Horseware ranges rather than a simple good-better-best ladder, and the prices in this collection reflect that: Amigo coolers sit between £51.95 and £69.95, Rambo coolers at £59.95 and £86.95, and the Newmarket fleeces from £77.95 to £112.95. Amigo is the practical everyday choice, Rambo covers the technical quick-drying weaves, and Newmarket is the traditional smart fleece look. Pick on what the rug needs to do, not on the badge.

Will a cooler fit over or under a turnout rug?

Under. Coolers are designed as a base or standalone layer and work well beneath a turnout on a cold day, adding warmth without bulk. They are not waterproof, so a cooler should never be the outer layer in the field. If you plan to layer, take the cooler in your usual rug size rather than sizing down.

Which Horseware cooler suits a clipped horse in winter?

A clipped horse loses heat fast once work stops, so a warmer fleece is the sensible choice – the Horseware Thermal Cooler (£109.95) or the Horseware Newmarket Cosy Fleece Cooler (£112.95), which is stocked from 5ft 6 up to 7ft 3. If the neck is clipped too, the Horseware Amigo Jersey Integrated Cooler (£69.95) covers it without a separate hood.

Do these coolers come in pony sizes?

Yes. The Horseware Newmarket Petite Fleece Cooler covers the smallest ponies and youngstock from 2ft 6 up to 3ft 9 at £77.95. The Horseware Amigo Jersey Pony Cooler is stocked from 3ft 9 right through to 5ft 9 at £51.95, and the Horseware Newmarket Pony Fleece Cooler from 4ft 3 to 5ft 9 at £86.95 – both run well into small-horse lengths. The Horseware Newmarket Fleece is also available in a Pony size at £86.95.
