Horseware Turnout Rugs
Horseware turnout rugs keep your horse warm, dry and rub-free out in the field, with waterproof 900D and 1200D outers and fill weights from 0G (no fill) up to 400G heavyweight. This collection spans over 120 Horseware options across the Amigo, Rhino, Wug and Ionic ranges, plus matching turnout hoods. Turnout rugs start from £59.95, with turnout hoods from £34.95.
In a hurry?
- Not sure on warmth? 0G = waterproof, no fill (mild/wet days); 50-100G = lightweight; 150-250G = medium to heavy; 400G = heavyweight for cold, clipped horses.
- Everyday all-rounder: the Amigo Ripstop 900D Turnout 0G (£68.95) is a popular lightweight waterproof.
- Toughest outer: Amigo 1200D Plus and Rhino Plus use a 1200D ballistic-strength shell - Amigo 1200D Plus from £155.95, Rhino Plus Pony from £189.95.
- Want neck cover built in? Choose a Wug (integrated high neck) such as the Amigo 1200D Wug, from £155.95, or add a matching turnout hood from £34.95.
How do I choose the right Horseware turnout rug?
Two numbers matter: the denier (the D number, e.g. 900D or 1200D) tells you how tough and tear-resistant the outer fabric is, and the fill weight in grams tells you how warm the rug is. A higher denier suits horses that are hard on their rugs or turned out in rough paddocks; a higher fill weight suits colder weather and clipped horses that can't grow a full winter coat.
Turnout weight chooser
| Fill weight | Best for | Rough temperature guide |
|---|---|---|
| 0G (no fill) | Waterproof rain sheet - keeps a horse dry without adding warmth | Mild but wet days |
| 50-100G (lightweight) | Cool days, unclipped or lightly clipped horses | Around 10-15°C |
| 150-250G (medium/heavy) | Cold weather, clipped horses, most UK winters | Around 0-10°C |
| 400G (heavyweight) | Deep cold, fully clipped, older or hard-to-warm horses | Below freezing |
Temperatures are a general guide only - always factor in your horse's clip, age, condition, shelter and how much they feel the cold.
What is the difference between Amigo, Rhino and Wug?
Amigo is Horseware's core value range, available in 900D and 1200D outers and a wide spread of fills - from the Amigo Ripstop 900D Turnout 0G (£68.95) up to the Amigo 1200D Plus (from £155.95). Rhino is the premium, hard-wearing line built for durability, such as the Rhino Plus Pony (from £189.95). A Wug isn't a separate brand - it's a cut with an integrated high neck for extra wither and neck coverage, like the Amigo 1200D Wug (from £155.95). Horseware also offers the Ionic Therapy Turnout 100G (£173.95) and the recycled-fabric Amigo 900D Revive Plus (from £129.95).
Do I need a matching turnout hood?
A turnout hood (or neck cover) adds warmth and protection over the neck and shoulders, and helps keep a clipped or mane-tidy horse cleaner. Matching Horseware hoods start from £34.95 for the Amigo Ripstop 900D Turnout Hood 0G. If you'd rather have neck coverage built into the rug itself, choose a Wug cut instead.
How do I measure my horse for a turnout rug?
Measure in a straight line from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock (the edge of the tail). That length in feet and inches is your rug size - Horseware turnouts in this collection run from small pony and petite sizes up to 7ft 6. If your horse falls between two sizes, our team can help you decide; sizing between ranges can vary slightly.
Horseware turnout rug FAQs
What does the D number (denier) mean on a turnout rug?
Denier measures the strength and tear-resistance of the rug's outer fabric. Horseware turnouts in this collection use 900D and 1200D outers - a higher number means a tougher shell, which suits horses that are hard on their rugs or turned out in rough fields. Denier is about durability, not warmth; warmth comes from the fill weight.
What fill weight turnout rug does my horse need?
As a rough guide, 0G is a waterproof rain sheet with no added warmth, 50-100G suits cool days, 150-250G covers most cold UK winter conditions, and 400G is a heavyweight for deep cold or fully clipped horses. Always adjust for your horse's clip, age, condition and access to shelter.
What is a Wug turnout rug?
A Wug is a rug cut with an integrated high neck that extends coverage over the wither and neck without needing a separate hood. In this collection the Amigo 1200D Wug is available from £155.95 across several fill weights, so you can pick the warmth level you need with the high-neck fit built in.
How do I measure my horse for the correct rug size?
Measure from the centre of the chest, along the body, to the point of the buttock. The result in feet and inches is your rug size. Horseware turnouts here range from petite and small pony sizes up to 7ft 6. If you're between sizes, contact our team for help before ordering.
Are Horseware turnout rugs fully waterproof?
Yes - Horseware turnout rugs are designed with waterproof, breathable outers to keep your horse dry in the field, including the 0G rain-sheet options that add no warmth. Re-proofing the outer periodically after washing helps maintain water repellency over the rug's life.
How much do Horseware turnout rugs cost?
In this collection turnout rugs start from £59.95 and matching turnout hoods from £34.95. Prices rise with denier and fill weight - for example the Amigo Ripstop 900D Turnout 0G is £68.95, the Amigo 1200D Plus from £155.95 and the Rhino Plus Pony from £189.95.
