Horseware Turnout Rugs
Heavyweight Turnout Rugs
Lightweight to heavyweight turnouts that stay put in any field.
Horseware Heavyweight Turnouts
Horseware heavyweight turnouts are the rugs you reach for when the field is wet, the wind is up and the temperature drops. This collection holds 9 Horseware turnouts with fills from 250g up to 450g, plus a two-layer Duo Plus system, priced from £138.95. For a normal cold, wet British winter the safe default is a 350g to 450g fill under a tough outer shell. Go lighter only if your horse is unclipped, well covered and out for short spells; go heavier if he is clipped and lives out.

What counts as a heavyweight turnout?
In everyday UK yard language a turnout rug is called heavyweight once the fill reaches roughly 300g. Fill weight is simply the amount of insulating wadding inside the rug, measured in grams per square metre. It is not the same thing as the outer fabric, and it is not the same thing as waterproofing.
| Fill weight | Usually called | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| No fill | Rain sheet | Wet but mild days |
| Around 50g to 150g | Lightweight | Autumn and spring |
| Around 200g to 250g | Medium | Cold but drier winter days |
| 300g and above | Heavyweight | Deep winter, clipped horses, horses living out |
By that measure most of this collection sits firmly in heavyweight territory. The Horseware Rambo 1680D Plus Turnout 250G Vl sits just below it, and the Horseware Rambo Duo Plus Turnout (100G + 300G) reaches it by pairing a 100g rug with a 300g layer.
One thing worth knowing before you compare: the product pages for several of the Vari-Layer rugs here, including the 450g Rhino models, describe them as mediumweight, so you will see both words used for the same rug. The gram figure in the product name is the number to compare on.
What do the denier numbers mean?
The D in 840D, 1000D, 1200D and 1680D is denier, a measure of how thick the yarn in the outer shell is. As a rule of thumb, a higher denier means a heavier, more tear-resistant outer, which matters most for horses that play hard, roll in hedges or share a field with a rug-chewing friend. A lower denier is lighter to handle and to hang up wet.
The fabric matters as much as the number. Ballistic nylon, used on the Rambo rugs here, is a different material from the polyester and polypropylene outers used elsewhere in the range, so a 1000D ballistic nylon and a 1000D polypropylene are not directly comparable. The table below gives the stated outer for every rug in stock.

How much rug does my horse actually need?
Three things move the answer more than the weather forecast does: whether the horse is clipped, how many hours a day he is out, and how much shelter the field has. A clipped horse living out through a wet January is the classic case for 400g or 450g. An unclipped native type in a sheltered paddock will often be too warm in the same rug. If you are not sure, feel behind the withers and along the shoulder after a few hours out: cool and dry is right, damp or hot means too much rug.
Is one heavy rug enough, or should I layer?
A single heavyweight is simpler and usually cheaper. Layering gives you more range from one purchase, which is what the Horseware Rambo Duo Plus Turnout (100G + 300G) is built around, since the 300g layer can come out when the weather softens. If your winter swings from mild and wet to hard frost, layering saves you owning three rugs.
How do you measure for a Horseware turnout?
Stand your horse square on level ground. Run a soft tape from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock. The measurement in feet and inches is your rug size. If you land between two sizes, most people size up for a deep-bodied or broad horse and size down for a fine, narrow-framed one.
Sizes across this collection run from 5ft 6 to 7ft 3, although not every size is in stock in every rug at any one time. If you are between sizes or unsure which will fit, get in touch and our team will help.
Combo, hood or standard neck?
Neck coverage is handled three different ways in this collection, and it is worth checking before you order.
- Built-in Wug neck: the Horseware Amigo 1200D Wug Turnout 400G and the Horseware Rhino Wug Turnout 450G Vl use a Wug cut, a higher neck shaped into the rug itself and designed for high-withered, narrow horses to reduce wither pressure. Nothing extra to buy.
- Detachable hood included: the Horseware Trot Plus Turnout 350G, the Horseware Rhino Plus Turnout 450G Vl and the Horseware Rambo 1680D Plus Turnout 250G Vl each list a detachable hood as supplied with the rug.
- Hood bought separately: the Horseware Rambo 1680D Turnout 450G Vl has the closures for a hood but lists the hood itself as a separate purchase. The Horseware Rambo 1000D Turnout 400G and the Horseware Rambo Duo Plus Turnout (100G + 300G) do not list a hood, so check the product page if you want neck coverage.
If you are not sure which combination suits your horse, get in touch and our team will help you match a rug to a neck cover.
Horseware heavyweight turnout FAQs
What fill weight counts as a heavyweight turnout rug?
Around 300g of fill and above is generally treated as heavyweight in the UK. In this collection the fills run from 250g up to 450g, plus the Horseware Rambo Duo Plus Turnout (100G + 300G), which reaches heavyweight warmth by pairing a 100g rug with a 300g layer. Note that some Vari-Layer rugs here are described as mediumweight on their own product pages even at 450g, so compare the gram figure rather than the label.
Which Horseware heavyweight turnout is the cheapest?
The Horseware Trot Plus Turnout 350G at £138.95 is the lowest-priced rug in this collection, it carries a 350g fill and a detachable hood is included. The next step up is the Horseware Amigo 1200D Wug Turnout 400G at £189.95.
What size Horseware turnout rug do I need?
Measure from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock, and use that figure in feet and inches as your size. Sizes in this collection run from 5ft 6 to 7ft 3. Stock varies by rug and colour, so if the size you want is not showing, get in touch and our team will help.
Do these Horseware turnouts come with a neck cover?
It depends on the rug. The Horseware Trot Plus Turnout 350G, Horseware Rhino Plus Turnout 450G Vl and Horseware Rambo 1680D Plus Turnout 250G Vl list a detachable hood as included. The Amigo 1200D Wug Turnout 400G and Rhino Wug Turnout 450G Vl have a higher neck shaped into the rug instead. The Rambo 1680D Turnout 450G Vl lists its hood as a separate purchase, so check the product page before ordering.
Are heavyweight turnout rugs waterproof?
Turnout rugs are made to be worn outdoors in wet weather, with an outer shell designed to keep rain out while letting moisture escape. The exact shell fabric and finish differ between rugs, so check the individual product page for the specification of the one you are considering.
Can my horse wear a 450g rug all winter?
Only if the conditions justify it. A 450g rug such as the Horseware Rhino Plus Turnout 450G Vl or the Horseware Rambo 1680D Turnout 450G Vl suits a clipped horse living out in genuinely cold, wet weather. On milder days the same rug can leave a horse sweating under it, which is uncomfortable and can chill him later. Check under the rug regularly and change down when the weather softens. If your horse has a health condition or is losing or gaining weight unexpectedly, speak to your vet before changing his rugging routine.
