Horseware Lightweight Stable Rugs
Which Horseware lightweight stable rug should you buy?
For most stabled horses in mild or transitional weather, a 50g Horseware stable rug is the right starting point — the Horseware Amigo Ripstop Insulator Stable 50G at £68.95 is the easiest all-rounder here. If nights are colder or your horse is clipped, step up to a 100g fill such as the Horseware Rhino Stable 100G at £103.95. If your horse only needs a dust sheet or a light layer over the top of something else, an unfilled stable sheet like the Horseware Amigo Stable Sheet at £68.95 does the job without adding warmth.
Every rug on this page is a Horseware stable rug, so it is built for indoor use only — these are not waterproof turnout rugs. Fills run from unfilled sheets through 50g up to 100g, with matching stable hoods if you want neck coverage too.

What does "lightweight" actually mean on a stable rug?
Rug weight refers to the grams of polyfill sewn into the rug, not how heavy it feels to carry. Unfilled sheets add no warmth at all and simply keep dust, bedding and shavings off the coat. A 50g fill adds a modest amount of insulation. A 100g fill is still classed as lightweight in UK rugging terms but gives noticeably more warmth — it is the point most riders reach for once a horse has been clipped or once nights turn genuinely cold.
How do I know if my horse needs 0g, 50g or 100g?
Start with the horse rather than the thermometer. An unclipped horse in good condition with a full winter coat often needs nothing more than a sheet indoors. A trace-clipped horse in light work is usually comfortable in 50g. A fully clipped horse, an older horse, or one that visibly tucks up and shivers overnight is the candidate for 100g. Check under the rug at the shoulder and behind the elbow each morning: warm and dry is right, damp or hot means you have over-rugged.
Can I layer these rugs instead of buying a heavyweight?
Yes, and that is exactly what the Horseware Easy-Layer Stable 100G at £95.95 is designed for. Layering gives you far more control than a single thick rug: on a mild night you drop back to a sheet, on a cold snap you add the layer underneath. Make sure both rugs fit properly and that the inner one is not being dragged backwards by the outer, which is the usual cause of shoulder rubs in a layered system.
What is the difference between a stable rug and a turnout rug?
Waterproofing. Every rug in this collection is a stable rug and is intended for indoor use, so none of them should be used in the field or left on a horse standing out in the rain. Turnout rugs use a waterproof, breathable outer shell; stable rugs prioritise breathability and comfort instead, which is why they sit more softly and are far easier to wash. If your horse needs a rug for the paddock, you want a turnout, not one of these.
Which sizes are available?
Horse sizes on this page run from 5ft 6 up to 7ft 3 depending on the model, and the pony rugs start at 3ft 9. Stable hoods are sized X-Small through to X-Large. To measure, run a tape from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock — that measurement in feet and inches is your rug size. If your horse sits between two sizes, going up is normally safer than going down, particularly on a rug that will be worn overnight.
Do the hoods fit any of the rugs?
Hoods are designed to attach to their matching range, so pair the Horseware Amigo Ripstop Insulator Stable Hood 100G with an Amigo rug, the Horseware Rhino Stable Hood 100G with a Rhino rug, and the Horseware Easy-Layer Stable Hood 100G with the Easy-Layer rug. Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest Horseware stable rug on this page?
The lowest-priced full-size stable rug in this collection is the Horseware Amigo Ripstop Insulator Stable 50G at £68.95, alongside the unfilled Horseware Amigo Stable Sheet, also £68.95. For ponies, the Horseware Amigo Ripstop Insulator Pony Stable 100G is £59.95. Stable hoods start at £34.95.
Can I use a Horseware stable rug for turnout?
No. Stable rugs are not waterproof and are made for indoor use in the stable or for travelling. Using one in the field means it will soak through, lose any insulating value and sit cold and heavy on the horse. Choose a turnout rug for outdoor use.
Is 100g still a lightweight rug?
Yes. In UK rugging terms 100g sits at the top of the lightweight band, with mediumweight generally starting around 200g and heavyweight around 300g and above. A 100g stable rug such as the Horseware Rhino Stable 100G at £103.95 gives useful overnight warmth for a clipped horse without the bulk of a mediumweight.
What is the difference between the Amigo, Rambo and Rhino stable rugs?
They are different Horseware ranges at different price points. Amigo is the value end — the Amigo Ripstop Insulator Stable 100G is £77.95. Rhino sits in the middle at £103.95 for the Rhino Stable 100G. Rambo is the premium build, with the Rambo Stable 100G at £109.95 and the Rambo Optimo Stable Sheet at £139.95. All three do the same core job; the differences are in outer fabric, fittings and finish.
How do I stop a stable rug rubbing my horse's shoulders?
Rubbing is nearly always a fit problem rather than a fabric problem. Check the rug is the correct size, that the chest straps are done up snugly enough that the rug is not sliding backwards, and that cross surcingles are adjusted to allow roughly a hand's width of clearance. A lycra shoulder guard worn underneath helps horses with sensitive skin or a fine coat. If rubs keep appearing in the same place, the size or shape is wrong for that horse.
How should I wash a Horseware stable rug?
Brush off dried mud and hair first, undo and secure all straps so they cannot tangle, and wash cool on a gentle cycle using a rug wash rather than ordinary detergent or fabric softener. Never tumble dry — hang the rug over a rail or fence to dry naturally. Always follow the care label on the individual rug, as it takes precedence over general advice.
