What does “mediumweight” actually mean?
Reading the gram rating
The number on a stable rug — 100g, 200g, 250g, 400g — is the weight of the insulating fill, not the weight of the whole rug. A mediumweight sits in the middle: warmer than a lightweight liner, less bulky than a full winter rug. In this collection the mediumweight core is the 200g group, with the Horseware Rhino Stable 250G Vl at £114.95 a small step up and the Horseware Rambo Stable 400G at £134.95 for genuinely cold, still nights in an exposed barn.
Clipped or unclipped?
A clipped horse has lost the coat that would normally trap warm air, so it will usually need more rug than an unclipped horse in the same stable. Many owners run a 200g stable rug as the everyday winter option for a clipped horse and drop to something lighter, such as the Horseware Newmarket Cosy Stable 100G at £95.95, in milder spells. Unclipped, native-type horses often manage on far less. Judge by the horse rather than the calendar: feel the base of the neck and behind the shoulder, and look for a horse that is dry and settled rather than damp or shivering.
How do you get the size right?
Measuring
UK stable rugs are sold in feet and inches. Measure from the centre of the chest, along the side of the horse, to the point of the buttock, and round up to the nearest listed size. Sizes here run from 3ft 9 for small ponies up to 7ft 3 for the biggest horses, though not every rug is made across the full span — pony-cut options such as the Horseware Rhino Pony Stable 250G Vl at £95.95 cover the smaller end.
Checking the fit in the stable
Once it is on, you should be able to slide a flat hand under the chest fastenings and along the withers without forcing it. Watch the shoulder and the point of the hip after a few nights — those are the first places rubbing shows. A rug that pulls back at the chest is usually too small; one that slips sideways when the horse lies down is usually too big.
Do you need a matching hood?
A hood is optional. It is worth it if your horse is fully clipped, if you are trying to keep a show or competition coat clean and lying flat, or if the stable block is draughty. All three hoods here are 200g and are cut to match a specific rug range: the Horseware Amigo Ripstop Insulator Stable Hood 200G at £42.95, the Horseware Rhino Stable Hood 200G at £55.95, and the Horseware Rambo Optimo Stable Hood 200G at £68.95. Match the hood to the rug range rather than mixing, so the neck and shoulder line up properly.
Which range suits your budget?
Broadly, the Amigo rugs are the everyday, best-value end of this collection, starting at £86.95. The Rhino rugs sit in the middle at £95.95 to £114.95. The Rambo rugs are the premium end, from £134.95 up to £229.95 for the Horseware Rambo Optimo Stable Plus 200G. The Horseware Easy-Layer Stable Plus 200G at £129.95 and the Horseware Signature Stable 200G at £154.95 sit between the two. Full specifications, linings and fastenings are listed on each product page — if you are torn between two, get in touch and our team will help.
Horseware mediumweight stable rug FAQs
Is a 200g stable rug enough for a British winter?
For most stabled horses, yes. A 200g fill is the standard everyday winter choice in a reasonably sheltered stable, and it is the fill used by the majority of the rugs in this collection. If your horse is fully clipped, thin-skinned or in a cold, exposed barn, either add a liner underneath or step up to the Horseware Rambo Stable 400G at £134.95. If the yard is warm and the horse is unclipped, a 200g rug can be too much and a lighter option such as the Horseware Newmarket Cosy Stable 100G at £95.95 may suit better.
What is the cheapest Horseware mediumweight stable rug you sell?
The Horseware Amigo Ripstop Insulator Stable 200G is £86.95, currently in stock from 5ft 6 to 7ft 0. For ponies, the Horseware Amigo Ripstop Insulator Plus Pony Stable 200G is also £86.95, in stock from 3ft 9 to 5ft 9. Matching hoods are sold separately and start at £42.95.
How do I measure my horse for a stable rug?
Measure in a straight line from the centre of the chest, along the horse’s side, to the point of the buttock. Convert that to feet and inches and round up to the nearest listed size. Sizes across this collection run from 3ft 9 to 7ft 3. If your horse falls between two sizes, the larger size is usually the safer choice for a stable rug, as long as it does not slip sideways when the horse lies down.
Can I layer a mediumweight stable rug instead of buying a heavyweight?
Layering is a common and flexible approach: a liner under a 200g stable rug lets you add or remove warmth as the weather swings, rather than owning several rugs. The Horseware Easy-Layer Stable Plus 200G at £129.95 is designed with layering in mind. Do check the fit once layered — an extra layer can tighten the chest and shoulder, so make sure you can still slide a flat hand underneath.
Do I need a hood as well as the rug?
Only if you want the extra neck and shoulder coverage — hoods are sold separately, not included. They are most useful for fully clipped horses, draughty stables, or keeping a competition coat clean. Choose the hood that matches your rug range: Amigo Ripstop Insulator Stable Hood 200G at £42.95, Rhino Stable Hood 200G at £55.95, or Rambo Optimo Stable Hood 200G at £68.95.
What is the difference between the Amigo, Rhino and Rambo stable rugs?
They are different Horseware ranges at different price points. In this collection Amigo covers the everyday options from £86.95, Rhino rugs sit in the middle from £95.95 to £114.95, and Rambo is the premium end from £134.95 up to £229.95. The fill weight is what determines warmth, so a 200g Amigo and a 200g Rambo are comparable in warmth — the difference is in the outer fabric, lining and fittings, which are listed on each product page.
