Hy Equestrian DefenceX Shield Aeris Mesh Fly Rug
Description
Hy Equestrian DefenceX Shield Aeris Spacer Mesh Fly Rug with Detachable Neck
The Hy Equestrian DefenceX System Shield Aeris Fly Rug is a lightweight summer turnout rug made from breathable spacer mesh and supplied with a detachable neck cover. It is best for horses and ponies turned out at grass through the fly season who need a physical barrier against flies and biting insects without the warmth of a heavier rug.
The airy spacer mesh construction lets air move freely through the fabric, while the removable neck section extends protection over the crest and neck and can be taken off on cooler or less buggy days.

How to Use
- Measure your horse from the centre of the chest, along the body, to the point of the rump to find the correct size in feet and inches.
- Attach the neck cover to the rug before fitting if you want full neck coverage.
- Fold the rug, lay it over the withers and unfold it back over the quarters rather than throwing it on.
- Fasten the chest straps first, then the surcingles, then the leg straps, linking the leg straps through each other.
- Check you can fit a flat hand under each strap, and check the fit at the withers, shoulders and chest.
- Remove daily to groom, check for rubs and shake out dust or grass seed from the mesh.
FAQ
What size fly rug do I need?
Measure in a straight line from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the rump. That measurement in feet and inches is your rug size. If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one, as a short rug rubs at the shoulders and chest.
Can the neck cover be removed?
Yes. The neck cover is detachable, so you can run the rug with full neck coverage during peak fly season and remove the neck on cooler days or when insect pressure drops.
Is a spacer mesh fly rug too warm for summer?
No. Spacer mesh is an open, breathable fabric designed to allow airflow, so it provides insect coverage without the insulation of a turnout or stable rug.
Will it stop my horse rubbing?
A correctly sized rug reduces rubbing, but always check the shoulders, withers and chest in the first few days of wear and adjust the straps so they are secure without being tight.
How do I clean it?
Brush off dried mud, then hose or sponge the mesh with cool water and mild detergent. Dry naturally away from direct heat and check straps and fastenings before the rug goes back on.
Is it suitable for ponies as well as horses?
Yes, provided you choose the correct size for your animal. Browse more horse rugs to compare fly, turnout and stable options.
