Which Bucas fly mask should I choose?

The right mask depends on three things: how much of the face you want covered, whether your horse's ears or muzzle need protecting, and how many masks you need. Use the table below to narrow it down quickly.

What does a fly mask actually do?

A fly mask puts a fine mesh barrier between your horse and the flies that gather around the eyes, nostrils and ears. That helps cut the constant head-shaking, stamping and rubbing you see on a still, warm day, and it keeps flies away from the damp corners of the eye they are drawn to. The mesh also filters some sunlight, which is useful for horses with pink skin or pale faces.

A mask is turnout kit, not a medical treatment. If your horse has a weeping eye, a raw patch, sarcoids or any skin problem around the face, speak to your vet first — a mask can help keep flies off while the vet's plan does the work, but it is not a substitute for that advice.

Do I need ear covers?

Ear covers help horses that shake their heads constantly or get bitten on the ear rims. Some horses tolerate them happily; others find them fiddly and will rub. When is an extended nose worth it?

Greys, roans, Appaloosas and anything with a white blaze or pink muzzle burn far more easily than dark-skinned horses. The Bucas Buzz-Off Extended Nose Fly Mask (from £25) carries the mesh further down the face so the muzzle stays covered without adding a separate nose piece.

Why the zebra stripes?

The striped designs are built on the idea that a bold black-and-white pattern makes it harder for flies to judge a landing. Whether or not that holds for every horse, the mesh does the same physical job as any other Bucas mask, and plenty of owners simply like the look. How should a Bucas fly mask fit?

The mesh should sit clear of the eyelashes — if the lashes are brushing the mesh, the mask is too small or sitting too far back. Fastenings want to be snug enough that the mask cannot be rubbed off on a fence post, but loose enough to slide two fingers under the strap. Check daily for rub marks behind the ears and along the cheekbone, especially in the first week with a new mask.

How do I keep a fly mask clean?

Knock the dried mud off first, then hand-wash in cool water with a mild, non-biological soap and rinse thoroughly — leftover detergent is a common cause of face irritation. Dry flat and out of direct sun. Avoid a hot machine wash or a tumble dryer, which can distort the mesh panels and the stitching that holds them clear of the eyes. Two masks in rotation lets one dry properly while the other is on, which is part of why the 4-packs suit busy yards.
