How do I choose a rug weight?
Rug weight (the fill in grams) is a guide to warmth, not waterproofing. A 0g or lightweight rug suits mild, wet days and unclipped natives; 100–150g covers most of the UK autumn and a lightly clipped horse; 300g is for genuinely cold spells or a fully clipped horse with little natural coat. Check under the rug regularly for warmth and dryness rather than relying on the outside temperature alone, and remember denier (e.g. 1000d vs 1200d) measures outer-fabric strength, not warmth or waterproofing.
How do I get the size right?
Bucas rugs are sized in the UK by the length from the centre of the chest to the point of the buttock, given in feet and inches (for example 6'0" or 6'9"). Measure along the side of a horse standing square. If your horse is between sizes or broad through the shoulder, size up and use the shoulder gussets and adjustable chest fittings to fine-tune the fit. A well-fitting rug sits behind the withers, covers the tail area and stays balanced when the horse moves.

What is the Bucas Stay-Dry lining?
Stay-Dry is Bucas's fleece-like inner lining that wicks moisture away from the horse's coat and out through the fabric. In practice it means you can usually rug a slightly damp horse after exercise and let it dry under the rug, rather than waiting for the coat to dry first.
Does a higher denier mean a rug is more waterproof?
No. Denier (for example 1000d or 1200d) measures the strength and thickness of the outer fabric, so a higher denier is tougher against tears and rolling — but waterproofing comes from the coating or membrane, not the denier. A well-coated 600d rug can be just as waterproof as a heavier one.
Do Bucas Therapy (Recuptex) rugs actually work?
Bucas Therapy products use Recuptex, a stainless-steel mesh that reflects the horse's own naturally generated magnetic fields, which the brand suggests may help support circulation and comfort.
