Jodhpurs & Breeches

Jodhpurs, tops, jackets and competition wear for young riders.

Which Dublin jodhpurs, breeches or riding tights should my child wear?

For most young riders, Dublin Supa-Fit Zip Up Knee Patch Jodhpurs (from £29.69) are the safest first choice: they run from Childs 4/21 Inch up to 16/27 Inch, come in beige and navy, and the knee patches sit exactly where a child grips in rising trot. If your child rides several times a week and wants more grip through the seat, step up to Dublin Kids Everyday Riding Tights (from £34.19). For cold mornings, Dublin Kids Thermal Riding Tights (from £18.67) are the warm option. Everything on this page is Dublin, cut for children, and sized by age and waist inches.

What is the difference between jodhpurs, breeches and riding tights?

All three do the same job — a flat, seam-free leg so nothing rubs against the saddle — but they are built differently.

Jodhpurs run the full length of the leg to the ankle and are worn with short jodhpur boots. They are what most children ride in day to day. Breeches stop just below the calf and are worn with long boots or gaiters; they tend to look tidier for a lesson or a show. Riding tights are the stretchiest of the three, pull on like leggings, and are usually the most comfortable option for a child who is riding a lot.

How do Dublin children's sizes work?

Dublin child sizing uses two numbers, for example Childs 10/24 Inch. The first number is the age guide (10 years) and the second is the waist measurement in inches (24 inches). Because children vary enormously at the same age, always go by the waist measurement, not the age.

Measure round the natural waist with a tape over a t-shirt, not over a coat, and keep the tape level. If the measurement falls between two sizes, size up — the stretch in Dublin's fabrics takes up the slack, and a child in a growth spurt will get another season out of the larger size. Also check the inside leg: jodhpurs should reach the ankle bone so they sit neatly inside jodhpur boots without riding up.

Knee patch or full seat — which does my child need?

Knee patch means the grip material sits over the knee only. This suits riders doing a lot of rising trot and jumping, where the knee and lower leg are the anchor points. The Dublin Supa-Fit Zip Up Jodhpurs and the Dublin Prime Gel Knee Patch Breeches are both knee patch designs.

Full seat means the grip extends across the seat and down the inside of the leg. It gives a more secure feel in sitting trot and flatwork, and is often the more reassuring choice for a nervous or newer rider. The Dublin Kids Everyday Riding Tights, Dublin Kids Shona Denim Full Seat Breeches and Dublin Kids Cammy Comfort Twill Breeches are full seat designs.

Neither is better — it depends on what your child rides and how. If in doubt for a general riding-school child, knee patch is the more traditional starting point.

How should I wash and care for them?

Always check the care label on the garment itself, as it takes priority over any general advice. As a rule of thumb, turn riding tights and breeches inside out, wash cool on a gentle cycle, and skip the fabric conditioner — it coats the stretch fibres and the silicone or gel grip, which dulls the grip over time. Air dry rather than tumble dry, and keep them away from radiators. Brushing off dry mud before washing does more good than a hot wash ever will.

Frequently asked questions

What size Dublin jodhpurs does my child need?

Go by the waist measurement rather than the age. Dublin child sizes are written as age/waist, so Childs 10/24 Inch means an age-10 guide with a 24 inch waist. Measure round the natural waist over a t-shirt with the tape level. If your child falls between two sizes, choose the larger one — the stretch fabric takes up the difference and it allows for growth. If you would like a second opinion, get in touch and our team will help.

What is the difference between children's jodhpurs, breeches and riding tights?

Jodhpurs run full length to the ankle and are worn with short jodhpur boots — the standard choice for everyday riding. Breeches stop below the calf and are worn with long boots or gaiters, which looks tidier for lessons and shows. Riding tights pull on like leggings, have the most stretch and are usually the comfiest option for a child riding regularly. All three have flat seams so nothing rubs against the saddle.

Should I choose knee patch or full seat for a young rider?

Knee patch places the grip over the knee, which suits rising trot and jumping — the Dublin Supa-Fit Zip Up Knee Patch Jodhpurs and Dublin Prime Gel Knee Patch Breeches are built this way. Full seat carries the grip across the seat and inside leg for a more secure feel in sitting trot and flatwork, as on the Dublin Kids Everyday Riding Tights and Dublin Kids Shona Denim Full Seat Breeches. Knee patch is the more traditional starting point for a riding-school child; full seat often suits a less confident rider.

Are there warm Dublin riding tights for winter?

Yes. The Dublin Kids Thermal Riding Tights are the warm option in this range, currently in stock in Childs 8/23 Inch in black from £18.67. They are designed for cold mornings and unheated indoor schools. For milder weather, the Dublin Kids Everyday Riding Tights or the Dublin Performance Cool-It Gel Riding Tights are the lighter choices.

How much do Dublin children's jodhpurs and breeches cost?

In this collection, riding tights start from £18.67 for the Dublin Kids Thermal Riding Tights, jodhpurs start from £29.69 for the Dublin Supa-Fit Zip Up Knee Patch Jodhpurs, and breeches start from £33.53 for the Dublin Prime Gel Knee Patch Breeches. Prices shown are for sizes currently in stock and can change, so the product page is always the live figure.

What if the size turns out to be wrong?

We offer 90-day returns, so there is time to try them on at home and send them back if the fit is not right. Keep the item unworn and in its original condition with tags attached — trying jodhpurs on over clean leggings indoors is the safest way to check the fit without affecting a return. If you are unsure which size to order in the first place, get in touch and our team will help.
