Are Gallop rugs any good for the price?
Gallop sits at the entry end of the rug market, and that is exactly the point: these are solid, honest basics that do the everyday job of keeping a horse dry, warm or fly-free without stretching the budget. You get waterproof, breathable outer shells, shoulder pleats for movement and standard fastenings across most of the turnout range. Which rug weight (fill) do I need?
Rug "weight" refers to the grams of insulating fill — more fill means more warmth. As a general guide, the right weight depends on the weather and on how much of your horse's coat has been clipped off: a fully clipped horse feels the cold far more than one in full coat. Use this as a starting point, then adjust for your individual horse and always check they are neither sweating nor shivering.

Many owners keep two or three weights and layer or swap as the season changes. If you are unsure whether your horse is too warm or too cold, feel behind the shoulder under the rug and check for sweating or chill, and ask your vet if your horse has a health condition that affects temperature.
How do I measure my horse for a Gallop rug?
Rug sizes are usually given in feet and inches (for example 6'0", 6'3", 6'6"). To measure, stand your horse square and run a soft tape from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock (roughly where a vertical line would drop from the tail). That measurement in feet and inches is your rug size. If you fall between two sizes, most owners size up for comfort. A correctly fitting rug should sit comfortably in front of the withers, cover to the top of the tail, and allow free shoulder movement without rubbing. If your horse is hard to fit or prone to rubs, a saddle fitter or experienced yard manager can help you check the shape.

How much do Gallop rugs cost?
Gallop is one of the more affordable rug brands. At Just Horse Riders, in-stock Gallop rugs start from around £25 for lightweight pony rugs, with most full-horse turnout rugs falling between roughly £30 and £60 depending on the fill weight and whether the rug is a standard or combo (neck-included) style. Are Gallop turnout rugs waterproof?
Yes — Gallop turnout rugs are designed with a waterproof, breathable outer shell for use in the field in wind and rain. Stable rugs and fly rugs are not waterproof, as they are made for indoor use and summer respectively. As with any rug, waterproofing works best when the rug is kept clean and reproofed from time to time; heavy, prolonged rain and general wear will gradually reduce water resistance.
What is the difference between a turnout rug and a stable rug?
A turnout rug is waterproof and made for outdoor use in the field or paddock. A stable rug is not waterproof and is made for indoors — overnight warmth in the stable, travelling, or under a turnout for extra layering. What rug weight should I choose for winter?
For a typical cold British winter, many owners use a medium to heavyweight fill of around 200–350g, with 450g reserved for deep cold or fully clipped and cold-sensitive horses. The right choice depends on your horse's clip, age, coat and how exposed the field is. Use the weight guide above as a starting point, check your horse is neither sweating nor shivering, and speak to your vet if a health condition affects how your horse holds temperature.
Do Gallop rugs come in pony sizes?
Yes. Gallop's "Ponie" range mirrors the full-size Trojan rugs in smaller cuts suited to ponies and youngsters, covering turnout, stable, combo and fly styles. Measure from the centre of the chest to the point of the buttock to find the right size, and size up if your pony falls between two measurements.
Do I need a matching neck cover?
A neck cover is optional but useful in colder, wetter or windier weather, and for clipped horses that lose heat through the neck. Gallop offers combo rugs with an attached neck cover as well as separate matching neck covers you can add to a standard-neck rug.
