How do I choose the right bridle?

Hunter, padded or grackle?

The Hunter Bridle has a broad, flat cavesson noseband and a de-badged flat browband, so it suits showing, hunting and anyone who wants a traditional outline. Half-rubber show reins are included, and it starts at £29.10. The noseband is 2in on cob, full and x-full, and 1¾in on pony.

The Padded Bridle + Rubber Reins is the everyday choice: a soft padded browband and a padded flash noseband for comfort, with rubber reins included, from £25.92. It is also the only bridle here we currently stock in Shetland pony.

The Grackle Bridle uses a grackle ring noseband with sheepskin padding on the nose to spread pressure evenly, which discourages a horse from crossing its jaw. It is the jumping and cross-country option, comes with rubber reins, costs from £32.29, and is in stock in full and x-full.

What size should I order?

Sizes run Shetland pony, pony, cob, full and x-full, though not every line is stocked in every size — the table above shows what is actually available. As a rough guide, ponies under roughly 13.2hh take pony, most cobs and natives take cob, most 16hh horses take full, and larger or longer-headed horses (many warmbloods) take x-full. If your horse sits between sizes, measure the headpiece to bit length on a bridle that already fits and get in touch with the measurement — our team will help you pick.

Which reins should I buy?

All three rein options use rubber for grip, but they do different jobs. The Leather Flexi Rubber Billet Reins With Nylon Core (from £16.39) are leather with rounded rubber pimple grips and a no-stretch nylon core through the centre, so they stay strong and flexible without giving. The plain Rubber Reins (from £10.01) are the budget spare set — rounded rubber pimple grip, central buckle and buckle end fastenings, in a pony 4ft 8in length. The Rainbow Reins (from £12.40) are black with a rainbow pattern and the same rounded pimple grip; the bright banding gives an easy visual reference for hand position, and they come in full (5ft 8in) and pony (4ft 8in), the pony length suiting smaller hands.

Do I need a martingale or a breastplate?

They solve different problems. A running martingale acts on the reins to help regulate how the horse carries its head while still allowing freedom; the plain leather Gallop Equestrian Running Martingale starts at £9.22. A breastplate stops the saddle sliding backwards on a lean or narrow-shouldered horse, and the Gallop Equestrian Breast Plate Martingale (from £18.78) combines the two — a running martingale on a full leather breastplate with fully adjustable neck straps. If your saddle stays put and your horse carries its head sensibly, you need neither.

How do I look after leather tack?

Wipe the sweat and mud off after every ride with a damp cloth, let it dry away from direct heat, and condition it lightly every few weeks rather than soaking it once a season. Check the stitching at the buckle billets, the reins and the martingale attachments regularly — that is where leather tack fails first. Stored clean and dry, this range is built to take daily yard use.

Gallop Equestrian: your questions answered

Is Gallop Equestrian tack real leather?

Yes. The bridles, headcollars, martingales and breastplates in this range are made from leather, with rubber or sheepskin used where extra grip or padding is needed — for example the rubber-gripped reins and the sheepskin padding on the Grackle Bridle noseband. It is priced as everyday working tack rather than show tack, so expect a practical finish rather than a hand-finished show bridle.

Do Gallop Equestrian bridles come with reins?

Yes. The Padded Bridle + Rubber Reins (from £25.92) and the Grackle Bridle (from £32.29) are supplied with rubber reins, and the Hunter Bridle (from £29.10) comes with half-rubber show reins, so you do not need a separate set to ride in any of them. If you want a spare or a replacement pair, the Rubber Reins start at £10.01 and the Leather Flexi Rubber Billet Reins With Nylon Core at £16.39.

What colours are available?

Black and brown across the range, though availability varies by size and line. For example the Grackle Bridle is currently in stock in both colours in full and x-full, while the Running Martingale is in stock in brown only and the Rubber Reins in black only. Only the size and colour combinations we can actually ship are available to order.

Which size fits a native pony or a cob?

Most native ponies and cobs take the cob size, which is stocked in the Hunter Bridle, the Padded Bridle + Rubber Reins, the Leather Padded Headcollar, the Breast Plate Martingale and the Leather Flexi Rubber Billet Reins. Chunkier-headed cobs sometimes need full. Smaller ponies take pony, and Shetlands are covered by the Shetland pony size on the Padded Bridle + Rubber Reins. If you are unsure, get in touch and our team will help you size it.

Is a grackle bridle allowed in competition?

Grackle nosebands are widely permitted in jumping and eventing but are not allowed in most pure dressage tests, and rules differ between disciplines and governing bodies. Always check the current rulebook for the class you are entering before you compete. If dressage is your main discipline, the Hunter Bridle or the Padded Bridle + Rubber Reins is the safer buy.

What is the cheapest way into the range?

The Gallop Equestrian Running Martingale is the lowest-priced item currently in stock at £9.22, followed by the Rubber Reins at £10.01 and the Rainbow Reins at £12.40. Every in-stock line sits between £9.22 and £32.29, so a full leather bridle here costs less than many riders expect to spend on reins alone.
