What does hoof oil actually do?
Hoof oil sits on the outside of the hoof wall and helps slow the rate at which the horn loses and takes on moisture. That matters in the UK because our ground swings from baked-hard in July to sodden by November, and horn that is constantly wetting and drying is more likely to chip and split. Oil also gives the hoof a tidy, finished look for shows. It is a maintenance product, not a repair one: growth comes from the coronet band down and takes months, so consistency beats intensity.
How often should I apply it?
Most owners brush on a thin coat two or three times a week onto a clean, dry, picked-out hoof. Daily is fine in very dry spells. There is no benefit in slathering it on thickly — a light, even film over the wall and around the coronet band is what you are after.

What about wet fields and muddy winters?
Wet winters are hard on feet. The routine that helps most is simple and free: pick out daily, get mud off, and let the foot dry before you apply anything. Products go on after that, not instead of it. Stockholm tar on the sole and frog, and Frog Oil around the frog and heels, are the usual winter additions. If the frog looks ragged, smells strong, or the horse is sore, that is a farrier and vet conversation before it is a product one.
