Oil, grease or moisturiser — what is the difference?
Hoof oils are liquid dressings you brush or spray on for shine and surface condition — Lincoln Classic Hoof Oil and Green Hoof Oil are the traditional choices, and the Hoof Oil Spray (£6.18) does the same job in seconds. Greases are thicker and sit on the hoof longer: Black Hoof Grease (400g, £6.79) and the Classic Hoof Ointment (250g £9.19, 500g £13.42) suit horses turned out in wet or muddy fields. Moisture-focused dressings like Hydra Hoof (from £11.21) are aimed at hooves that look dry or brittle. If your horse's hooves are cracking or crumbling, ask your farrier first — a dressing supports the surface, but trimming and diet do the heavy lifting.
Does biotin actually help hooves?

What is pine tar (Stockholm tar) used for?
Stockholm tar is a traditional pine-derived tar applied to the sole and frog of the hoof. It helps maintain a healthy underside, particularly in wet, muddy conditions. Which tools do I need?

How long does biotin take to make a difference?
Hoof horn grows down from the coronet band slowly, so biotin supports the quality of new growth rather than changing existing hoof — most owners feed it consistently for several months before judging results. If hoof quality is a real concern, involve your vet or farrier alongside any supplement.
Should I use hoof oil every day?
Daily picking out matters more than daily oiling. Many owners oil a few times a week or before riding out, adjusting with the weather — more grease in wet turnout, lighter oil in summer. The Lincoln Hoof Oil Spray (£6.18) makes little-and-often easy because there is no brush to clean.
