Which Lincoln cribbing deterrent should you choose?
All four do the same basic job of making a chewed surface taste unpleasant, so choose by the surface you are treating and how you want to apply it.
- Crib Biting Preventative (400gm, £9.93) - the cheapest way in, and the one most people reach for on door tops and rail edges.
- Stop Cribbing Paint (400ml, £15.02) - brush it on when you have a long run of woodwork to cover in one go.
- Stop Cribbing Liquid (500ml, £10.23) - the thinnest option, useful where a paste or grease would be messy. Test on a hidden patch first if the surface is painted or fabric.
- Stop Cribbing Grease (500gm, £11.21) - stays put on awkward edges and timber that takes the weather.
Whichever you pick, remember that crib-biting is a behaviour rather than a fault in the woodwork. A deterrent protects the timber and supports your management plan, but it does not explain why the horse started. If cribbing is new, sudden or getting worse, speak to your vet before you rely on a deterrent alone.
How do you keep a stable smelling fresh?
The order matters more than the product. Muck out fully, let the floor dry, apply the deodoriser to the bare floor as directed on the pack, then re-bed on top. Doing it onto damp bedding is the usual reason people feel it "did not work". For swept concrete floors, drains and general yard hygiene, Lincoln Carbolic Powder (5KG, £44.77) is the heavier-duty option - follow the pack instructions on application and on keeping animals off treated areas.
What about lice in bedding and housing?
Lincoln Insecticidal Lice Control Powder Plus (750gm, £14.41) is an insecticidal powder for animals and the places they live. Follow the label exactly, including the species it is approved for and the intervals between applications, and treat the housing at the same time as the animal or you will simply reinfest. Itching, rubbing, hair loss and sore patches have several possible causes, so if the signs are severe, spreading or not improving, ask your vet to look before you keep treating.

How do you use stable deodoriser?
Muck out completely, let the floor dry, then sprinkle the powder over the bare floor following the rates on the pack and re-bed on top. Applying it over wet bedding is the most common reason a deodoriser seems to make little difference. The 4Kg tub of Lincoln Stable Deodoriser is £13.12.
Is the refill pouch the same product as the tub?
Yes - the Lincoln Stable Deodoriser Refill Pouch is the same deodoriser in a 3kg pouch at £10.23, so you can top up rather than buying another 4Kg tub. Keep the tub, it makes the powder easier to store and scoop.
Do cribbing deterrents stop crib-biting for good?
No. They make the treated surface unpleasant to chew, which protects your woodwork and helps break the habit on that spot, but they do not treat the underlying reason a horse cribs. Most horses need the deterrent reapplying, especially outdoors. If the behaviour is new or escalating, talk to your vet, since cribbing can be linked to discomfort as well as boredom or routine.
Which cribbing product works best on outdoor fencing?
For exposed timber, the thicker formats tend to stay put longest: Lincoln Crib Biting Preventative (400gm, £9.93) or Lincoln Stop Cribbing Grease (500gm, £11.21). Lincoln Stop Cribbing Paint (400ml, £15.02) is easier if you have a long stretch of rail to cover in one session. Expect to reapply after heavy weather.
Can I use carbolic powder while horses are in?
Follow the instructions on the 5KG pack. Carbolic powder is a disinfectant powder intended for swept floors, drains and yard surfaces rather than a product to scatter around occupied bedding, so apply it to cleared areas and observe any stated waiting time before animals return. If you are unsure about using it near a particular horse, ask your vet.
Is lice powder safe to use on my horse?
Lincoln Insecticidal Lice Control Powder Plus (750gm, £14.41) must be used strictly as the label directs, including the species it covers, the application rate and the interval between treatments. It supports control of lice, it is not a general skin treatment. If your animal is very itchy, sore, losing hair or otherwise unwell, get a vet to check the cause before treating repeatedly.
