Regular or Slim - which fit do you need?
Cavallo splits most of its range into two shapes rather than just sizes. Regular suits a rounder, wider hoof - typical of many natives, cobs and draught crosses. Slim suits a narrower, more upright or oval hoof, common in Thoroughbreds, Arabs and many sport horses. The Entry Level Boot, Simple Boot, Sport Boot, Trek and Cute Little Boot all come in both fits, so measure before you choose rather than guessing from your horse's breed alone.
How do you measure for Cavallo hoof boots?
Measure straight after a trim, on a flat, clean surface. Take the width across the widest part of the hoof and the length from the toe to the back of the heel buttress, both in millimetres. Compare those two numbers against the size chart shown on the individual boot page. If the width and length point at different sizes, the width usually decides the size and the width-to-length relationship decides Regular versus Slim. Not sure? What pads and spares are worth adding?
Pads sit inside the boot and change how the sole and frog are loaded. The Cavallo Support Pads (£12.56), Cushion Pad (from £12.56, in 5mm and 10mm) and Enhanced Hoof Protection Gel Pad (£12.56) are the popular choices, and there are model-specific pads including the Cute Little Boot Pad (£12.56), Big Foot Boot Protection Pad (£17.30) and Transport Air Comfort Pad (£17.30). Pads can support comfort on hard or stony going, but they are not a treatment - if your horse is footsore, lame or has a hoof problem, speak to your vet or farrier first.
For rub prevention around the pastern, the Cavallo Comfort Sleeve (£17.30) and Pastern Wraps (£12.56, medium in stock) sit between the boot top and the leg. Do Cavallo hoof boots fit over shoes?
Cavallo boots are designed around the barefoot or trimmed hoof, and that is where they fit best. Some owners do use them over shoes for short periods, but a shoe changes the width and depth of the hoof, so you may need to size up and you should check the fit carefully. If your horse is shod and you want boots for hacking or therapy work, ask your farrier what will work with the shoeing you have.
Do you buy Cavallo hoof boots in pairs or singly?
It depends on the product, and the listing tells you. Some Cavallo items are sold as a pair and some as a single boot, which is useful when only one hoof needs protection or when the front and hind hooves need different sizes. Will Cavallo hoof boots rub my horse?
Rubbing usually comes from a boot that is too big and moving, or from grit trapped inside. Fit the correct size, clean the boots out after every ride, and introduce them gradually over short sessions. The Cavallo Comfort Sleeve (£17.30) or Pastern Wraps (£12.56) add a soft layer where the boot meets the pastern and are the usual fix for a horse with sensitive skin. If any rub breaks the skin, stop using the boot and ask your vet for advice.
What is the difference between the Trek Regular Sole and the Trek Slim Sole?
They are the same boot in two hoof shapes. The Trek Regular Sole suits a rounder, wider hoof and the Trek Slim Sole suits a narrower, more upright hoof. Both are £85.63 here and both are numbered by size, so you pick the shape first from your hoof measurements and then the size. Can Cavallo boots be used for a horse with sore feet or laminitis?
Boots and pads can support comfort by cushioning the sole and reducing concussion on hard ground, and many owners use them as part of a plan agreed with their professionals. They do not treat or cure any hoof or metabolic condition. If your horse is footsore, lame, or you suspect laminitis, that is a vet call first - then fit boots to whatever management plan your vet and farrier set out.
How long do Cavallo hoof boots last?
That depends on mileage and surface - stony tracks and roadwork wear an outsole far faster than arena or field use. The parts that go first are usually the straps and closures rather than the boot itself, which is why replacement straps and closures start at £7.31. Rinsing grit out after each ride and letting the boots dry properly makes a real difference to how long a pair lasts.
