What do horse boots actually do?

Leg boots sit over the cannon bone, fetlock and tendon area and take the knock when a horse strikes one leg with another — brushing, over-reaching or clipping a pole. They help absorb and spread impact, which supports the leg during fast work, tight turns and jumping. They are not armour and they do not make a horse immune to injury. If your horse already has heat, swelling, lameness or a known tendon problem, speak to your vet before working the horse and before adding any support.

Brushing boots or fetlock boots — what is the difference?

Brushing (protection) boots are the taller ones that cover the inside of the cannon bone down over the fetlock, and are the usual everyday choice for flatwork and hacking. Fetlock boots are shorter and sit around the fetlock joint only, normally used behind so the horse can still feel a pole. The Set Of 4 at £36.47 pairs both shapes so the front and hind legs each get the right style.

What about stable boots and bandages?

Stable boots such as the HKM Padded Neoprene Stable Boots (£28.59, Pony/Black) are thicker and softer, made for standing time rather than ridden work — overnight in the box or during box rest. Bandages like the HKM Bandages Innovation (£13.82, 300cm) wrap over padding and give a smooth, close fit, but they only work properly if you can wrap evenly. Boots are the safer choice if you are still learning.

How do I get the size right?

Measure the horse rather than guessing from breed. Take the length of the cannon bone from below the knee or hock to the top of the fetlock, and the circumference around the cannon bone. Then compare against the size chart on the product page. As a rough guide, pony sizes suit smaller natives and youngsters, cob suits most 15hh–16hh horses, and full or X-Large suits bigger warmbloods. A boot should sit snugly with no rocking or twisting, and you should be able to slide a finger between the strap and the leg without the boot sliding down.

Looking after HKM boots and bandages

Knock off dried mud with a brush before it grinds into the lining, then wash. HKM lines in this collection are described as machine washable — use a cool wash, fasten the straps so the hook-and-loop does not grab the fabric, and air dry away from direct heat. Never put boots on wet or gritty legs: trapped sand and grit rubbing under a boot causes more sores than the boot ever prevents. Check the straps regularly; once the hook-and-loop stops gripping, replace the boot rather than pulling it tighter.

HKM boots and bandages: your questions answered

What is the cheapest HKM leg protection you have in stock?

The HKM Feltock Boots Basic at £8.92 is the lowest-priced in-stock option in this collection, available in Full/Black. Next up are the HKM Protection Boots Basic With Teddy Fur at £15.24 and the HKM Protection Boots Hkm Premium Front Legs at £17.85.

Should I put boots on all four legs?

Many riders boot all four for schooling and jumping, using taller brushing boots in front and shorter fetlock boots behind. That is exactly how the HKM Protection And Fetlock Boots, Set Of 4 (£36.47, Pony or Cob/Full) is put together. For gentle hacking, front boots alone are common. Whatever you choose, take boots off after work so heat and sweat can escape.

How tight should a brushing boot be?

Snug enough that the boot cannot rotate or slip down, loose enough that you can slide one finger between the strap and the leg. Fasten from the top down and keep even tension across the straps. A boot that slides is more likely to rub than one that is correctly fitted, and a boot done up too tight can restrict circulation.

Can HKM boots and bandages go in the washing machine?

The HKM lines in this collection are listed as machine washable. Brush off dry mud first, close every hook-and-loop strap so it does not snag, wash cool and air dry away from radiators or direct sun. Always follow the care label on the item itself.

Will leg boots stop my horse getting injured?

No. Boots help protect the leg from knocks and strikes and can reduce the impact of a brush or a clipped pole, but they cannot prevent strains, tendon damage or lameness. If your horse is showing heat, swelling, filling or any change in movement, ask your vet before continuing work — boots are not a treatment.

Some sizes and colours show as unavailable — will they come back?

Stock in this collection moves size by size and colour by colour, so a line can be live in one size and sold out in another. Of the 13 HKM lines here, 9 have stock at the moment. If the size you need is not showing, get in touch and our team will help you find the closest alternative or let you know what is expected back.
