Short answer: for most horses in UK summer turnout, an HKM fly rug in the correct back length plus a well-fitted fly mask covers the job. Standard fly rugs start at £16.35, fly masks from £10.49, and fly fringes from £2.91. If your horse is itchy and rubbing, step up to a full-coverage eczema rug (£65.42); if you want neck cover as well, choose a combo with an integrated neck.

How do I measure for an HKM fly rug?

UK rug sizes are back lengths in feet and inches. Stand your horse square, then measure in a straight line from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock. Round to the nearest listed size. If your horse falls between two sizes, going up usually gives better shoulder freedom, which matters more on a lightweight mesh rug than on a winter turnout.

Combo rugs with an integrated neck run to the same back-length sizing, so you do not need a separate neck measurement. If your horse is broad-shouldered or has a big wither, check the fit at the chest first — a fly rug that pulls across the front will rub before anything else does.

What size fly mask do I need?

Fly masks are sized by head type rather than back length. As a rough guide, Shetland pony suits small natives, pony suits 12hh to 14hh types, cob suits chunky 14hh to 15.2hh heads, and full suits most 15.2hh and over. The HKM Antifly Mask High Professional is sized medium and large instead. If your horse sits between sizes, the deciding factor is usually the distance from poll to muzzle rather than the width.

What is the difference between a fly rug and an eczema rug?

A fly rug is a light mesh body rug that keeps flies off the trunk, with straightforward chest and belly fastenings. An eczema rug covers more of the horse — typically extending further down the belly and over more of the neck and tail area — and is intended for horses that react badly to midge bites. The HKM Eczema Rug Security and HKM Eczema Rug Zebra at £65.42 sit in that second group.

Rugs are a physical barrier and part of a wider management routine, not a treatment. If your horse is already sore, broken-skinned or rubbing raw, speak to your vet before rugging over the area.

How do I stop a fly mask or rug rubbing?

Most rubbing comes from three things: the wrong size, a mask left on a dirty coat, or a rug worn day and night without a break. Check the fit weekly as your horse changes shape through the summer, brush mud and grit off before fitting, and take the mask off daily to check the skin around the eyes and cheekbones. Rinsing mesh rugs regularly stops dried sweat and dust from acting like sandpaper.

Frequently asked questions

How much is an HKM fly rug?

The HKM Fly Rug starts at £16.35 for a standard mesh body rug. Combos with an integrated neck start at £31.95 for the HKM Fly Rug Zebra With Neck, and full-coverage eczema rugs are £65.42. Fly masks start at £10.49 and fly fringes at £2.91.

Do I need a fly rug with a neck?

If flies concentrate on your horse's crest, mane and shoulders, or if your horse rubs the top of the neck, a combo is worth the extra outlay. Horses that are only bothered on the body are usually fine in a standard fly rug. Combo options here include the HKM Fly Rug Zebra With Neck at £31.95, the HKM Fly Rug With Neck Cow at £40.63 and the HKM Fly Rug Stars Combo at £38.68.

Are zebra-print fly rugs and masks any different?

Striped patterns are a popular choice with owners and there is ongoing research into how flies respond to high-contrast stripes, but the fabric, coverage and fit still do the practical work. Choose the shape and size that suits your horse first, then pick the pattern you like. HKM's striped options include the Antifly Mask Zebra at £11.79 and the Eczema Rug Zebra at £65.42.

Can my horse wear a fly rug in the rain?

A standard mesh fly rug is not waterproof, so it will let rain through and dry off again. That is fine in a passing shower on a warm day. For a wetter forecast, the HKM Fly Rug Rain at £47.35 is built for that mix of flies and showers. Whichever you use, take a wet rug off at some point in the day so the coat underneath can dry.

Will a fly rug help a horse with sweet itch?

Full-coverage eczema rugs such as the HKM Eczema Rug Security and HKM Eczema Rug Zebra (£65.42) are designed to support horses prone to sweet itch by putting a physical barrier between the skin and biting midges. They are one part of a management plan alongside turnout timing and stable management, not a treatment. If your horse already has broken or infected skin, ask your vet before rugging the area.

How do I wash an HKM fly rug?

Knock off dried mud first, then follow the care label on the rug. Cool washing and drip drying protect the mesh; hot washes, tumble drying and harsh detergents shorten its life and can stiffen fabric so it rubs. Fasten all the clips before washing so they do not snag the mesh. If you are unsure about a particular rug, get in touch and our team will help.
