How to choose the right riding boot
How should riding boots fit?
A boot that fits properly will keep your leg quiet against the saddle, your heel down and your foot secure in the stirrup. After fitting thousands of customers since 2010, the biggest mistake we see is guessing the calf width on tall boots. Measure the widest part of your calf and the height from the floor to just below the back of your knee — over the breeches you'll be riding in — before ordering. Follow those three measurements before you order and you'll get the fit right first time.
Leather or synthetic?
Both have their place. Leather softens and moulds beautifully over time but needs regular conditioning and isn't happy in heavy rain. Modern synthetics — what our own Englander Athena and Gaia boots are made from — are lighter, fully wipe-clean, vegan, and won't crack from being left damp. Here's how they compare:

For everyday riding, kids' boots and anyone who hates polishing, synthetic wins. For the show ring where presentation matters most, leather still has the edge.
What sole and grip should riding boots have?
You want a sole with enough grip to stay safe on a wet yard but with a defined heel and a smooth section under the ball of the foot, so it doesn't get caught in the stirrup. The rubber-mix soles on our Englander range handle both.

How do I look after my riding boots?
Whatever you go for, a five-minute end-of-ride routine will double their life. Wipe off mud and sweat with a damp cloth after each session, condition leather every couple of months, and store boots upright — boot trees or shapers stop the calf collapsing. Frequently asked questions
How much do horse riding boots cost?
Riding boots range from around £27 for children's jodhpur boots to £90+ for waterproof leather country boots. Our own Englander synthetic boots start at £29.95 for adult jodhpur boots and £54.95 for tall boots — typically about half the price of the equivalent leather boot.
What are the best riding boots for beginners?
For a first pair, most beginners do best with jodhpur (paddock) boots worn with half-chaps — they're affordable, comfortable and work for both lessons and the yard. The Englander Gaia (£29.95) is our usual recommendation; move to tall boots later if you start competing.
Which riding boots are best for wide calves?
Look for boots offered in a wide-calf fitting. Our Englander Athena tall boots and Hera country boots both come in standard and wide calf, and Shires Moretta also offers wider-calf options. Always measure the widest part of your calf over your breeches before ordering.
Are there waterproof riding boots?
Yes. Dedicated country and yard boots are designed to be fully waterproof — the leather Englander Hera and our yard boots and wellies all keep water out. Many synthetic jodhpur boots are shower-resistant rather than fully waterproof, so check the product page if you ride in heavy rain.
What's the difference between jodhpur boots and paddock boots?
None — in the UK we tend to say "jodhpur boots" for what Americans call "paddock boots". They're both ankle-height riding boots designed to be worn with jodhpurs or half-chaps.
Are synthetic riding boots as good as leather?
For most riders, yes — especially for daily use. Modern synthetics like the ones on our Englander Athena and Gaia boots are lighter than leather, fully waterproof, easier to clean, vegan-friendly and roughly half the price. Leather still wins for top-level competition and longevity if cared for properly.
How do I measure for tall riding boots?
You need three measurements: foot length, calf circumference at its widest point, and height from the floor to just below the back of the knee when standing. Take measurements over the breeches you'll be riding in. If you're ever unsure between sizes, just ask our team — we're always happy to help.
How do I choose children's riding boot sizes?
Children's riding boots follow normal UK shoe sizes. Allow a little growing room, but not so much that the foot slides around in the stirrup. If your child is between sizes, size up and add an insole. The Englander Gaia and Athena child's boots run from UK 10 (child) up to UK 3.
Will my new tall boots feel tight at first?
Yes — this is normal and expected. New tall boots should feel firm, with about an inch of extra height at the back of the knee. They'll "drop" as they soften and crease in around the ankle, which is the correct fit for riding.
Are Englander boots vegan-friendly?
Our Englander Athena and Gaia ranges are 100% synthetic and contain no animal products, making them suitable for vegan riders. The Englander Hera country boot uses real leather. Each product page lists the materials in detail.
Can I return riding boots if they don't fit?
Yes — we know boots can be tricky to get right first time. All boots from Just Horse Riders come with our 90-day returns policy so you can swap sizes if you need to. Just keep them clean and unworn outdoors.
