The main types are everyday pimple-grip cotton gloves (brilliant value), PU and leather gloves (smart and hard-wearing, the competition choice), winter gloves (fleece-lined and thermal), and tough yard gloves for jobs on the ground. Which riding gloves do I need?
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Pimple-grip cotton | Everyday riding and lessons — great value |
| PU / synthetic | All-round grip and durability at mid price |
| Leather | Competition, smartness and long life |
| Winter / thermal | Cold-weather riding — lined and windproof |
| Yard gloves | Mucking out, poo picking, haynets and field jobs |
How do I size riding gloves?
Measure around the widest part of your hand — across the knuckles, excluding the thumb — and compare with the brand's size chart. Gloves should fit snugly with no loose fabric at the fingertips, but not so tight they restrict movement. Children's gloves are usually sized by age; if in doubt, size up.

Frequently asked questions
Do I really need gloves for horse riding?
They're strongly recommended: gloves prevent rein rubs and blisters, keep your grip consistent in rain or sweat, and protect your hands when leading or lunging. Many riding schools and Pony Club activities expect them.
What size riding gloves should I buy?
Measure around your knuckles (excluding the thumb) and check the brand's chart. A good glove fits snugly to the fingertips without pinching; children's sizes usually run by age.
What gloves are best for winter riding?
Fleece-lined or thermal riding gloves with a grippy palm — warm enough for the yard but thin enough to feel the reins. Waterproof or windproof backs help on exposed hacks.
Can I wear riding gloves for yard work?
You can, but tough yard gloves last longer for jobs like haynets, fencing and poo picking — keep your riding pairs for riding so the grip stays good.
