Mark Todd
Mark Todd is a competition-focused equestrian range covering tall riding boots, breeches, girths, headcollars, base layers and show clothing. If you want one brand that takes you from the yard to the collecting ring, it covers a lot of ground: leather tall boots for the arena, denim and grip breeches for schooling, and hard-wearing girths, lead ropes and headcollars for everyday use. What else is worth knowing before you order?
Do I need standard or wide calf?
Measure round the widest part of your calf in the socks you actually ride in, then measure from the floor to the back of your knee crease while sitting. Standard calf suits average measurements; wide calf gives extra room through the leg without going up a shoe size. The Long Riding Boot Leather is currently stocked in both fittings, so you can pick the one that matches your measurement rather than sizing up and losing support around the ankle.
Which Mark Todd breeches suit which job?
For competition whites, the Latigo Boys Breeches (£41.99) and Breeches Venus Grip in white (£35.52) are the obvious picks. For schooling and hacking, Breeches Dark Denim Ladies (£35.85) and the Ladies Gisborne Breeches (£41.53) stand up better to yard life. The Breeches Contender Competition Ladies in fungi (£41.74) sits in between — smart enough to compete in, practical enough to school in.
What girth size do I need?
Girth size is measured buckle-end to buckle-end. Stocked options run 48 to 54 inch: the Girth Deluxe Synthetic Sheepskin Elasticated (48 inch, £59.23), the Deluxe Fleece Lined Webbing Girth and Girth Fleece Lined Webbing (52 and 54 inch, £33.24 each), and the leather Stud Girth Deluxe Leather Elasticated and Deluxe Leather Elasticated Stud Girth (50 and 52 inch, from £64.71). Fleece and sheepskin linings help reduce rubbing behind the elbow; if your horse already has a girth gall or a sore area, speak to your vet before riding again.
What about yard basics?
The Deluxe Padded Headcollar With Lead Rope (from £12.83) and Fleece Lined Headcollar With Lead Rope (from £16.02) cover pony, cob and full sizes. Cotton lead ropes are £7.06. For riding in the cold, the Base Layer (£25.31) and Kids Base Layer (£14.99) layer neatly under a show jacket such as the Show Jacket Elite (£64.71), and the Competition Polo Shirt Alicia Ladies (£38.52) works for warmer classes.
Which gloves are in stock?
The Softshell Horse Riding Gloves (£12.83) handle cold, damp schooling sessions, while the Leather Riding/Show Horse Riding Gloves (from £14.39) give a cleaner look for the ring. Glove stock is thin at the moment: the softshell pair is a size 10 navy, and the leather pair at £14.39 is a 4-6 years dark brown.
Mark Todd FAQs
Do Mark Todd boots come up true to size?
Mark Todd footwear is sized in EU sizes and generally runs close to true to size, but tall boots are decided as much by calf width and boot height as by foot length. Measure your calf and your floor-to-knee height before ordering, and pick the calf fitting that matches — going up a whole shoe size to gain calf room usually leaves the foot too loose.
What is the difference between standard calf and wide calf?
Standard and wide calf share the same foot size but differ in the circumference of the boot shaft. Wide calf gives extra room through the leg for riders with a fuller calf, or who wear thicker socks and breeches in winter. The Mark Todd Long Riding Boot Leather is stocked in 39EU and 41EU wide calf and 42EU standard calf, so you can choose the fitting rather than compromising on shoe size.
Are Mark Todd tall boots waterproof?
Some are, some are not. Two of the in-stock tall boots are built for wet weather: the Mark Todd Tall Waterproof Zip Boots (£102.99) and the Masterton Tall Boot (£187.65), which uses a fully waterproof waxed nubuck construction. The Long Riding Boot Leather is a leather field boot with a synthetic lining rather than a waterproof one, so it is best kept for riding and conditioned regularly. The Tall Winter Boots Fleece Lined Adult are nubuck and fleece lined for cold yards rather than for standing in puddles.
How do I measure for a Mark Todd girth?
Measure an existing girth that fits from the end of one buckle to the end of the other, in inches, and buy the same length. If you are starting from scratch, tack up and count how many holes are left on each billet — you want to be able to tighten from roughly the middle. In-stock Mark Todd girths run 48 to 54 inch in synthetic sheepskin, fleece-lined webbing and leather stud versions.
How do I look after leather Mark Todd boots?
Wipe mud and sweat off after each ride with a damp cloth, let the boots dry naturally away from direct heat, and condition the leather every few weeks so it stays supple. Use boot trees or roll the tops down loosely rather than folding them, and open the zip fully before pulling the boot on so you are not straining the slider.
What if the size I order is wrong?
You have 90 days to return unworn items in their original packaging, so it is fine to try boots and breeches on indoors on a clean floor before deciding. If you are between sizes or unsure about calf fitting, get in touch and our team will help you work out which size to order first.
