Description
The tom thumb bit is a cross between an American gag and an elevator bit. It offers more precision and control and is very popular for show jumping and cross country. It has a lifting effect in front which can assist the rider in helping to sit the horse back on its hocks, enabling tighter turns and more efficient jumping. The uplifting action combined with poll pressure can also discourage horses from leaning on the bit. Can be used with one rein on either the snaffle ring or the lower ring or alternatively, for increased precision, with two reins. Blue sweet iron oxidises easily which creates a warming sensation and a sweet taste in the horse's mouth, helping them to accept the bit. Please note that the blue colour will fade with use, this is normal. Measurements As per our size guide the A & B measurements of this bit are as follows: A=15mm B=125mm Blue Sweet Iron Horse Bits... Blue Sweet iron bits oxidise easily which creates a warm sweet taste in the horse's mouth, encouraging them to salivate. Some horses often prefer the warm sensation of sweet iron compared to stainless steel which is naturally colder. Sweet iron bits are therefore ideal for sensitive horses or horses that need encouragement to mouth and accept the bit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What material is this bit made from?
The bit is made from blue sweet iron, which oxidises easily to create a warming sensation and a sweet taste in the horse's mouth, encouraging salivation and acceptance of the bit. Note that the blue colour will fade with use - this is completely normal.
Why might sweet iron be preferable to stainless steel for some horses?
Sweet iron is naturally warmer than stainless steel, which can feel cold in the mouth. The warm, sweet taste produced as the sweet iron oxidises can be particularly helpful for sensitive horses or those that need encouragement to mouth and accept the bit.
Can this bit be used with two reins?
Yes. It can be used with a single rein attached to either the snaffle ring or the lower ring, or with two reins for increased precision and control.
What are the measurements of this bit?
According to the Premier Equine size guide, the A measurement is 15mm and the B measurement is 125mm.
What disciplines is this bit suited to?
The description highlights show jumping and cross country as particularly popular disciplines for this bit, owing to its lifting effect and ability to assist with tighter turns and more efficient jumping.
How does this bit help horses that lean on the bit?
The uplifting action combined with poll pressure can discourage horses from leaning on the bit, and the lifting effect in front can help sit the horse back on its hocks.
