What do I need to plait a horse's mane?
You will need a mane comb, plaiting bands or thread and a needle, and a little water or setting spray. Our most popular choices are Shires Silicone Plaiting Bands (from £1.79), Lincoln Plaiting Bands (from £1.20) and Shires Plaiting Thread (from £1.80), with a Premier Equine Plaiting Comb (from £0.92) for sectioning. Bands are quicker; sewn plaits with thread usually stay neater for longer.
What should a rider take to a show?
A hairnet keeps hair tidy under your hat: Equetech Heavy Duty Riding Hairnets (from £1.82) and the Hy Hair Net (from £1.20) are favourites. For classes that need a stock, add a stock pin such as the Equetech Traditional Plain Stock Pin (from £2.66). A number bib, for example the Shires Aubrion Number Bib (from £9), keeps your number visible, and spare gloves, a hoof pick and a grooming kit are always worth packing.
How do I add the finishing touches?
Quarter marks add a smart pattern to the hindquarters: Supreme Professional Quarter Marking Spray (from £9.72) helps them hold. Coat shine sprays add gloss, but keep them off the saddle area so the saddle does not slip.

Show day: frequently asked questions
Plaiting bands or thread: which is better?
Bands are quick and easy, which makes them popular for local shows and beginners. Sewn plaits with thread take longer but usually look neater and stay in better for bigger shows.
How many plaits should a horse have?
There is no single rule. Traditionally an odd number of plaits along the neck plus one in the forelock is common, but the right number depends on your horse's neck length and the class. Check the expectations for your discipline.
Where should I not use coat shine spray?
Avoid the saddle and girth area, as shine sprays can make the saddle slip. Apply to the rest of the coat, mane and tail after grooming.
How much does show preparation kit cost?
At Just Horse Riders, hairnets start from under £1, plaiting bands from around £1.20, stock pins from around £2.25 and number bibs from around £9. Prices on the collection are live and may change.
