What does an exercise sheet actually do?
Cold air draws heat out of a horse's back and hindquarters faster than the rest of the body, especially during walking, warm-up and cool-down when the horse is not working hard enough to generate much heat. An exercise sheet holds that warmth in, which helps muscles stay supple through the slower parts of a session. In wet weather a waterproof sheet also stops the coat soaking through, so a clipped horse is not riding home cold and dripping.
None of this replaces a proper warm-up or veterinary care. If your horse is stiff, sore or short in front, speak to your vet before adding kit.
Do I need a fleece or a waterproof sheet?
Fleece is the everyday choice for cold, dry conditions: it is light, it breathes, and it wicks sweat away during cool-down. The Shires Wessex Fleece Exercise Sheet at £22.50 covers 48 to 60 inch in one Newmarket design. Waterproof sheets earn their keep the moment rain starts: the StormX Original Waterproof Exercise Sheet at £29.56 combines a waterproof outer with reflective detail. Plenty of riders keep one of each and pick by the forecast.
Which sheets suit road riding?
For road work, choose fluorescent colour for daylight and reflective panels for headlights. The Shires Equi-Flector® Mesh Exercise Sheet at £27.00 in Yellow covers 48 to 60 inch, the Woof Wear Hi Vis Exercise Sheet at £59.99 runs X-Small to X-Large, and the Premier Equine Reflective Exercise Sheet at £90.00 pairs Yellow with silver reflective strips.
What if my horse is on a horse walker or lunge?
Walker and lunge work is low-intensity, so a light rug that stays put through turns is what you want. The Rhinegold Horsewalker/Lunge Rug at £32.72 covers 5ft 6 to 6ft 9 in Navy Blue or Yellow, and the Bucas Therapy Walker Rug at £198.00 is the premium option in Small to X-Large.
How do I size and fit an exercise sheet?
Most sheets in this collection are sized either in feet and inches (4ft 0 up to 7ft 3, or 48 to 60 inch) or in Pony, Cob, Full and X-Full, or X-Small to X-Large. As a rule, a sheet takes the same size as your horse's stable rug. Measure from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock.
Fit checks worth doing on day one: the sheet should sit clear of the withers, sit under or around the saddle without pulling, and the fillet string or tail loop should sit snug enough that the back edge cannot flip up in wind. Walk a lap before you trot. If you are between sizes or unsure, get in touch and our team will help.

Exercise sheet questions, answered
What is the difference between an exercise sheet and a quarter sheet?
A quarter sheet covers the hindquarters only, sitting behind or under the back of the saddle, which keeps the shoulder completely free for jumping and fast work. A full exercise sheet extends further forward over the shoulders and chest for more coverage in cold or wet weather. Both terms are often used loosely, and some riding rugs wrap right around the front. In this collection the Equi-Flector Mesh Quarter Sheet at £21.60 is a true quarter sheet, while the LeMieux Arika Exercise Sheet at £49.95 gives fuller coverage.
Do you use a saddle pad with a quarter sheet?
Yes. The saddle pad goes directly on the horse's back under the saddle, and the quarter sheet layers over the hindquarters. Some sheets are designed to be tucked under the saddle flaps or held by the girth straps, and others sit on top and fasten with their own chest clip and fillet string. Check the product page for the fixing method, and make sure nothing bunches under the saddle or the girth.
What size exercise sheet do I need?
Start with your horse's usual rug size. Measure from the centre of the chest, along the body, to the point of the buttock, and match that to the sheet's size in feet and inches. Sheets here run from 4ft 0 to 7ft 3, and some brands use Pony, Cob, Full and X-Full or X-Small to X-Large instead. Where a brand uses inches, 48 inch is roughly a 4ft 0 and 60 inch roughly a 5ft 0. If you are between two sizes, get in touch and our team will help.
Are hi-vis exercise sheets worth it for road riding?
A sheet is one of the largest flat surfaces on a ridden horse, so it is one of the most effective places to put fluorescent colour and reflective strips. Fluorescent yellow, orange and pink stand out in daylight and poor visibility; reflective silver panels light up in vehicle headlights after dark. The Firefoot Reflective Exercise Sheet at £21.50 is an affordable way to add both, and many riders pair a hi-vis sheet with a matching rider tabard.
Can I ride in an exercise sheet in summer?
Not a fleece or waterproof one, but a mesh summer sheet is made for it. Open-weave mesh lets air through while giving some protection from flies and sun, and hi-vis mesh keeps you visible on summer evening hacks. The Rhinegold Bright Yellow Cutaway Mesh Ride On Rug at £22.27 covers Pony to X-Full. Never leave a warm horse in a non-breathable sheet in hot weather.
Do therapy or ceramic sheets help a horse's muscles?
Ceramic-lined sheets are designed to reflect the horse's own body heat back, which supports muscle warmth during warm-up and cool-down. Many riders use them as part of a routine rather than as a treatment. They are not a substitute for veterinary or physiotherapy care: if your horse is lame, sore or behaving differently under saddle, speak to your vet first. The Bucas Therapy Quarter Sheet at £109.00 is the entry point in this range.
