What is the difference between turnout and stable rugs?
Turnout rugs, such as the Rambo 1680D Turnout range, use a tough, waterproof and breathable outer shell so your horse stays dry in the field. Stable rugs, like the Rambo Stable and Optimo Stable Plus, are not waterproof — they are built for warmth and comfort indoors. Many owners keep both: a turnout for the field and a stable rug for the box.
How do I choose the right fill weight?
Fill weight is shown in grams (0G, 100G, 200G, up to 450G). A higher number means more warmth. Lightweight 0G–100G rugs suit mild days and clipped horses in autumn; midweight 200G–300G covers cold, changeable weather; heavyweight 400G–450G is for deep winter or fully clipped horses. If you are unsure, get in touch and our team will help you match a weight to your horse and climate.
Do Rambo rugs come in liners and hoods too?
Yes. The Rambo Optimo and Airmax systems use interchangeable liners (100G, 200G and 300G) so one outer can adapt across the seasons. Matching neck hoods add extra cover for wind and rain. Coolers such as the Rambo Airmax and Techni Waffle help wick moisture after exercise or travel.
How do I care for my Rambo rug?
Brush off dry mud, then wash with a specialist rug cleaner rather than household detergent, which can strip the waterproof finish. Re-proof turnout rugs periodically to keep them repelling water, and store them clean and fully dry to prevent mildew. Always check leg and chest straps for wear before each use.
Horseware Rambo FAQs
Are Horseware Rambo turnout rugs fully waterproof?
Yes. Rambo turnout rugs such as the 1680D range use a waterproof, breathable outer designed to keep your horse dry in wet field conditions. Stable rugs in the collection are made for indoor warmth and are not waterproof.
What fill weight should I choose for winter?
For deep winter or fully clipped horses, a heavyweight 400G or 450G rug gives the most warmth. Midweight 200G–300G suits cold but changeable weather, while 0G–100G is best for mild days. If you are unsure, get in touch and our team will help.
How do I measure my horse for a Rambo rug?
Measure in a straight line from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the tail. That measurement, in feet and inches, matches Horseware's rug sizing. If your horse falls between two sizes, get in touch and our team will help you decide.
Can I use one Rambo rug across different seasons?
Yes. The Rambo Optimo and Duo systems use interchangeable liners so a single outer can be adjusted from lightweight to heavyweight as the weather changes, which many owners find more economical than buying separate rugs.
What is the cheapest way into the Rambo range?
The Rambo Fly Mask is one of the lowest-priced in-stock items at £42.95, followed by accessories such as the Rambo Slinky Shoulder from £47.95. Coolers like the Techni Waffle start from £59.95.
How should I wash and re-proof a Rambo turnout rug?
Use a specialist horse-rug cleaner rather than household detergent, which can damage the waterproof coating. Re-proof turnout rugs periodically, then store them clean and fully dry to avoid mildew.
