Which Amigo rug do I need?

Rugs are grouped by job and by fill weight (the higher the gramme figure, the warmer). Use this chooser as a starting point, then check each product's size guide.

Rug type Best for Typical fill Example
Turnout Waterproof outdoor wear in the field 0G-400G Amigo Ripstop 900D Turnout, 1200D Wug Turnout
Stable / Insulator Warmth indoors (not waterproof) 50G-550G Amigo Ripstop Insulator Stable
Cooler Wicking sweat / travel / drying off None Amigo Jersey Cooler, Net Cooler
Fly rug Insect and UV protection in summer None Amigo Bug Rug, Bug Buster
Accessories Hoods, fly masks, chest extenders - Amigo Fly Mask, Bug Rug Hood

How do Amigo fill weights work?

Fill is measured in grammes (G). As a rough guide: 0G is a lightweight or rain sheet with no warmth; 50G-100G suits mild or transitional weather; 150G-250G is medium weight for cold, changeable UK winters; and 350G-400G is heavyweight for hard-clipped horses or very cold spells. Amigo turnouts in this collection run up to 400G, and stable insulators up to 550G. Many owners keep a light and a heavy rug and layer with a stable rug underneath when temperatures drop.

What is the difference between a Wug and a standard turnout?

The Amigo Wug is a turnout cut with a higher, shaped neckline and a built-up wither for horses that need extra neck coverage and freedom of movement. The standard Ripstop 900D Turnout uses a conventional neckline. Both are waterproof and breathable; the Wug (1200D outer) uses a tougher, higher-denier shell for horses that are hard on their rugs.

Turnout, stable or cooler - can I use one rug for everything?

Not really. A turnout is waterproof for outdoor use; a stable rug or insulator is designed for indoor warmth and is not built to keep rain out; and a cooler is an unlined wicking layer for drying a hot or wet horse. Using the right rug for the job keeps your horse comfortable and makes each rug last longer.

Horseware Amigo rug FAQs

What is the cheapest Amigo item in this collection?

Prices in the Amigo collection start from £16.95 for accessories such as the Amigo Ear Net and Straight Front Chest Extender. Full rugs such as the Ripstop 900D Turnout 0G start from £68.95.

Are Amigo turnout rugs waterproof?

Yes. Amigo turnouts, including the Ripstop 900D Turnout and the 1200D Wug Turnout, use a waterproof and breathable outer shell for outdoor use. Amigo stable rugs, insulators and coolers are not waterproof and are intended for indoor or drying-off use only.

What fill weight should I choose for a UK winter?

For a typical cold, wet UK winter, many owners choose a medium to heavyweight turnout of 150G-250G, moving up to 350G-400G for clipped horses or very cold spells. In milder weather a 0G-100G rug is usually enough. If your horse is unclipped and native, they may need less than a fine-coated or clipped horse.

How do I measure my horse for an Amigo rug?

Measure in a straight line from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock. That measurement in feet and inches is the UK rug size. Amigo rugs are sold in standard UK sizing; each product page lists the available sizes, and pony-specific cuts are available for smaller frames.

Do Amigo fly rugs help with sweet itch and sun?

Amigo fly rugs such as the Bug Rug and Bug Buster provide a physical barrier that helps protect against biting insects and UV exposure, which many owners find supports the management of insect-sensitive horses. They are not a medical treatment - if your horse has severe sweet itch or a skin condition, speak to your vet about a full management plan.
