Lunging & Groundwork
Hand-picked ranges for the moments that matter: bonfire night, show day, wet hacks, travelling and more.
Lunging & Groundwork Equipment
Lunging and groundwork build fitness, balance and manners without a rider on board. The core kit is a lunge line, a lunge whip and either a lunge cavesson or a bridle with a lunge attachment, plus boots for your horse and gloves and a hat for you. Just Horse Riders stocks lunging and groundwork equipment from Shires, Hy Equestrian, Rhinegold, Kincade, Windsor, Cameo Equine and Waldhausen, from around £5.

What equipment do I need to lunge a horse?
Start with a lunge line such as the best-selling Shires Wessex Soft Feel Lunge Line (from £8.99) or Windsor Padded Lunge Line (from £8.70). A lunge attachment like the Cameo Equine Newmarket Attachment (from £5.41) or Kincade 2 Tone Lunge Attachment (from £6.29) links the line to the bit evenly. Add brushing boots for your horse, and always wear gloves and a riding hat yourself.
Do I need a lunge roller or lunging aid?
A roller such as the Whitaker Lunge Roller (from £26.92) gives you rings to attach side reins or a lunging aid. Lunging aids, for example the Hy Equestrian Lunging Aid (from £16.30), encourage a horse to work in a rounder outline. Introduce any training aid gradually and ideally with guidance from a coach, as incorrectly fitted aids can do more harm than good.
What is groundwork?
Groundwork covers in-hand exercises such as leading, backing up, yielding and work over poles. A rope halter like the HKM Rope Halter (from £14.18) and a longer lead rope are popular for this. Short, regular sessions with clear rewards work best.

Lunging and groundwork: frequently asked questions
How long should a lunge line be?
Most lunge lines are long enough to work a horse on a circle of around 15 to 20 metres. Keep spare line neatly looped in your hand and never wrap it around your hand.
How long should I lunge my horse for?
Sessions are usually kept fairly short, as working on a circle is demanding. Change direction regularly, and build up gradually with young, unfit or returning horses. Your coach or vet can advise for your horse.
Should my horse wear boots for lunging?
Yes, brushing boots or bandages are recommended, as horses can knock their legs on a circle. Check they fit well and stay in place.
How much does lunging equipment cost?
At Just Horse Riders, lunge attachments start from around £5, lunge lines from around £6 and lunge rollers from around £27. Prices on the collection are live and may change.
