What does Nettex do for mud fever season?
Wet, churned-up fields are the main trigger for sore, scabby heels. The practical routine is barrier first, cleaning second. Muddy Marvel Barrier Cream (600ml, £16.37) goes on clean, dry legs before turnout and helps keep wet mud off the skin. Seven Day Mud Away (500ml, £11.06) is the other half of the job — it helps loosen dried-on mud so you are not scrubbing sore skin every evening.
Important: broken, weeping or clearly infected skin is a vet job, not a shopping job. Barrier and cleaning products support healthy skin; they do not treat infection. If heels are cracked, hot, swollen or your horse is lame, call your vet first.
How often should I reapply a mud barrier?
Most owners apply before each turnout in the wettest months and check legs daily. Legs need to be dry when you apply, otherwise you seal moisture in. If you are bringing a horse in soaking every night, letting mud dry and brushing it out is usually kinder than repeated washing.
Which Nettex fly product should I choose?
Fly Repellent Advanced is the straightforward choice here — £15.26 for the 500ml spray, or £59.94 for the 2 Litre, which works out cheaper per millilitre if you are treating more than one horse. For horses that are already rubbing and sore, pair it with Summer Freedom Salve Complete (300ml, £17.81), which is designed to soothe and cover the itchy hotspots along the mane, tail and midline.
Around the yard rather than on the horse, Buz Busters Louse Powder (300gm, £7.19) and Ground & Bedding Sanitising Powder (2kg, £18.58) tackle the environment, which is where a lot of the problem lives.
Do Nettex calmers actually suit my horse?
There are two different approaches and they are not interchangeable. E-Calm (1kg, £33.89) is a daily powder fed over weeks — it suits a horse that is generally sharp, tense or hard to settle. Calmer Syringe Paste Boost (3 x 30ml, £13.37) is a syringe you give ahead of a known flashpoint: clipping, box rest, travelling, the farrier, or a first outing off the yard.
Calmers support normal, relaxed behaviour — they are not sedatives and they will not fix pain, ulcers, poor fitting tack or a horse that is simply over-fed and under-worked. If behaviour has changed suddenly, rule out pain with your vet before reaching for a supplement. If you compete, always check the current rules of your discipline before feeding anything new.
What does Nettex offer poultry keepers?
Red mite is the big one. Total Mite Kill Spray (250ml £10.20, 500ml £15.14) is handy for perch ends, cracks and corners; Total Mite Kill Liquid RTU (750ml, £11.61) is the ready-to-use version for covering a whole house. Feather Mite Powder (300gm, £7.13) handles the birds themselves.
Beyond mites, the poultry range covers condition and housekeeping: Poultry Vit Boost Tonic with Added Seaweed (500ml, £14.19), Egg & Shell Support Powder (450gm, £6.10), Poultry Seaweed (400gm, £6.04), Poultry Power Drops (30ml, £12.71), Anti Feather Pecking Spray (250ml, £9.59), Poultry Sanitiser & Egg Wash (500ml, £6.01) and Scaly Leg Spray (250ml, £8.18).
What about farm and smallholding use?
The same range extends to livestock. Lamb Kick-Start (100ml, £21.65), Twin Lamb Solution (450ml, £22.94), Calf Colostrum (200gm, £15.12) and Calf Colostrum Gold (450gm, £43.71) cover the lambing and calving shed. Agri-Gel starts at £4.59 for 500ml and runs up to 5 Litre at £17.76, and Traditional Pig Oil (2 Litre, £23.96) is a smallholder staple.
Yard basics are here too: Veterinary Surgical Scrub (500ml, £6.71), Septiclense Spray (500ml, £10.21 clear or £10.26 violet), Umbilical Spray (500ml, £10.58), Footmaster Spray with Violet (500ml, £9.39) and a Digital Thermometer at £7.67.
Which Nettex grooming products are worth having?
For everyday washing, Everyday Conditioning Shampoo is £7.94 for a full litre. Before a show, Whitening Shampoo (500ml, £13.84) and Stain Remover (500ml, £7.15) deal with grass stains and stable marks, and Coat Shine (500ml, £18.22) finishes the job. Mane & Tail Detangler (500ml, £8.52) takes the fight out of a knotted tail before you start brushing.
Nettex FAQs
Is Nettex only for horses?
No. The range splits across three areas: equine (mud barriers, fly repellents, calmers, gut supplements, shampoos), poultry (mite treatments, tonics, egg and shell support, coop sanitisers) and farm livestock (colostrum, lambing and calving aids, foot and skin products). We list 168 Nettex lines, so most yards, coops and smallholdings are covered from the same brand.
Which Nettex product is best for mud fever?
Use Muddy Marvel Barrier Cream (600ml, £16.37) on clean, dry legs before turnout to help keep wet mud off the skin, and Seven Day Mud Away (500ml, £11.06) to help lift dried mud without constant washing. These support healthy skin rather than treating an infection. If the skin is broken, weeping, hot or swollen, or the horse is lame, speak to your vet first.
What is the difference between E-Calm and the Calmer Syringe Paste Boost?
E-Calm (1kg, £33.89) is a daily powder fed in with hard feed and used over a longer period to support a generally settled horse. Calmer Syringe Paste Boost (3 x 30ml, £13.37) is a syringe given before a specific event such as clipping, travelling or a farrier visit. Neither is a sedative, and neither replaces veterinary advice if behaviour has changed suddenly. If you compete, check your discipline's current rules before feeding anything new.
How do I choose between Total Mite Kill Spray and the Liquid RTU?
The spray (250ml £10.20, 500ml £15.14) is easier for targeted work — perch ends, joints, cracks and corners where red mite hide. The Liquid RTU (750ml, £11.61) is ready to use and better suited to covering a whole coop surface. Many keepers use both, plus Feather Mite Powder (300gm, £7.13) on the birds themselves. Always follow the label directions and safety instructions on the pack.
Is the bigger size always better value?
Usually, yes. Fly Repellent Advanced is £15.26 for 500ml against £59.94 for 2 Litre, which is cheaper per millilitre once you are treating more than one horse. Agri-Gel runs from £4.59 for 500ml to £17.76 for 5 Litre on the same basis. The exception is anything with a shelf life you will not get through — for a single horse or a handful of hens, the smaller pack often makes more sense.
What if I am not sure which product suits my animal?
Get in touch and our team will help you narrow it down based on the animal, the season and how you keep them. For anything involving broken skin, lameness, illness, pregnancy or a sudden change in behaviour, talk to your vet first — supplements and topical products support normal health, they do not diagnose or treat disease.
