A running martingale runs from the girth to two rings on the reins, and only acts when the horse lifts its head too high. We stock around 30 in Pony, Cob and Full sizes, in leather and synthetic, from Shires, LeMieux, Premier Equine, Collegiate, Dublin and Hy Equestrian.
How To Fit A Running Martingale
- Length: with it fastened to the girth, the rings should reach up to the withers.
- Neck strap: room for about a hand's width at the withers.
- Rein stops: always use them, so the rings can't catch on the bit or the rein fastenings.

Running Martingale FAQs
What does a running martingale do?
It stops the horse lifting its head above the point of control. When the head is in a normal position it should have no effect on the reins.
What is the difference between a running and a standing martingale?
A running martingale acts through the reins and the bit. A standing martingale attaches to a cavesson noseband and acts on the nose, so it never pulls on the reins. Many riders choose a running martingale for jumping and hacking.
Can I compete in a running martingale?
It depends on the discipline and class: some allow them, and dressage does not. Check your rule book before you compete.
