Everyday Horse Supplements
Everyday supplements fill the gaps a horse's basic diet can leave — especially for good doers on restricted grazing, horses on forage-only diets, and those fed less than the recommended amount of hard feed. The core options are daily vitamin and mineral supplements, balancers, salt licks and electrolytes, oils for condition, and trusted all-rounders. Just Horse Riders stocks over 500 from brands including Dodson & Horrell, NAF, Equimins and Super Codlivine, from under £3.

Does my horse actually need a supplement?
If he eats the full recommended amount of a fortified hard feed, largely no — it's already added. The horses that genuinely benefit are the ones on forage-only or token feeds: UK forage is commonly short of a few key minerals, and a daily vit & min or balancer covers that inexpensively. When in doubt, a salt lick plus a broad daily supplement is a sensible, low-risk baseline.

Frequently asked questions
Does my horse need a daily supplement?
If he lives on forage with little or no fortified feed — which covers most good doers — then a daily vitamin and mineral supplement or balancer is genuinely useful. If he eats the full ration of a fortified feed, he's probably already covered.
What is the difference between a balancer and a supplement?
A balancer is a concentrated pelleted feed providing daily vitamins, minerals and quality protein in a small scoop; a supplement is a powder or liquid added to feed for a specific purpose. For gap-filling, they do a similar job — pick the format your horse eats happily.
Do horses need salt licks?
Yes — forage and most feeds are short of sodium, and a lick lets the horse self-regulate. Horses in sweaty work often need added electrolytes on top, especially in summer.
How long before I see a difference?
Give any daily supplement four to six weeks of consistent feeding — coat, hooves and general wellbeing change on a timescale of weeks to months, not days.
