What does an "everyday" herbal supplement actually do?
Everyday herbal supplements are intended as a nutritional top-up. They supply plant material, and in some cases added nutrients such as biotin, that support normal body functions — hoof horn growth, skin and coat condition, digestion and general wellbeing. They are not medicines. Nothing on this page cures, treats or prevents disease, and none of it replaces veterinary advice, dental checks, farriery or a properly balanced diet.
How long before I see a difference?
It depends what you are supporting. Coat and general condition often shift over a few weeks. Hoof horn is much slower — new horn takes roughly nine to twelve months to grow down from coronet to ground, so a hoof supplement such as Hilton Herbs Hoof & Health With Biotin (£15.45, 2kg) needs several months of consistent daily feeding before you can fairly judge it. Take before-and-after photos so you have something objective to compare.
Powder, liquid, lick or lotion — which format suits my horse?
Powders such as Herb Power (£19.24, 1kg) mix into a damp feed and suit horses that already get a hard feed. Liquids like Apple Cider Vinegar (from £4.83) are easy to measure and go over feed or into water, though some horses object to the smell at first. A Himalayan Rock Salt Lick (£7.87, Medium 3kg) is free-choice, so the horse decides — useful for a fussy eater or a horse out at grass. Bye Bye Itch Lotion (from £9.89) is applied to the skin rather than fed, so it can be used alongside anything in the feed bucket.
Can I feed more than one Hilton Herbs product at once?
Often yes — a lick, a feed supplement and a topical lotion do quite different jobs. The thing to watch is duplication: if two products contain the same herbs or the same added nutrients, you can end up feeding well over the intended amount. Read both labels, stick to the manufacturer's feeding rates, and if you are unsure about stacking products, get in touch and our team will help.
Are herbal supplements safe for competition horses?
Not automatically. Some plants — garlic being the obvious one — appear on prohibited or restricted lists depending on the governing body and the discipline. Rules change, so always check the current list published by your own governing body and observe any withdrawal period before you compete. If in doubt, ask your vet.
Buying and storage tips
- Match pack size to use-by, not just price. A 5 Litre Apple Cider Vinegar at £12.41 is better value per litre than the 1 Litre at £4.83, but only if it is used within the shelf life.
- Keep it dry and dark. Store powders and cut herbs sealed, cool and out of sunlight; damp is what spoils herbal blends fastest.
- Introduce gradually. Start at a fraction of the recommended rate and build up over a week or so, especially with strong-smelling products.
- One change at a time. If you add three things at once and something improves, you will never know which one did it.
- Check the label every time you reorder. Feeding rates differ between pack sizes and between similar-sounding products.

Do I need to ask my vet before feeding a herbal supplement?
For a healthy horse in normal work, an everyday herbal supplement fed at the recommended rate is usually straightforward. Speak to your vet first if your horse is on medication, is pregnant or lactating, has a diagnosed condition such as laminitis, PPID or liver disease, or if you are trying to address a specific problem. Supplements support normal health; they do not diagnose or treat anything, and a vet should always look at a genuine health concern.
How much does a Hilton Herbs supplement cost per day?
Divide the pack price by the number of days it lasts at the label's feeding rate for your horse's weight. A 1kg pack fed at 25g a day lasts 40 days; a 2kg pack fed at the same rate lasts 80. Compare products on cost per day rather than cost per pack, and remember that a bigger pack only saves money if it is finished before it goes stale.

My horse refuses the supplement. What can I do?
Go back to a pinch and rebuild slowly over ten days or so. Damp the feed, add a little chaff or soaked beet to carry the powder, and split the dose across two feeds if your horse gets two. Some horses simply will not accept a strong herb, in which case a free-choice option such as the Himalayan Rock Salt Lick (£7.87) or a topical product such as Bye Bye Itch Lotion (from £9.89) may fit better. If a horse suddenly goes off feed altogether, stop and call your vet.
