Horseware Mediumweight Turnout Rugs
A mediumweight turnout is the rug most UK horses live in for the bulk of autumn, winter and early spring — warm enough for cold, wet weather, but not so heavy that an unclipped horse overheats on a mild day. This page brings together our full range of Horseware mediumweight turnouts (36 products) across the three ranges Horseware is famous for: Amigo for everyday value, Rhino for the step-up in toughness and fit, and Rambo for the hardest-wearing rugs money can buy. In-stock rug prices start at £68.95 for the Amigo Ripstop 900D Petite Turnout 200g, with full-size horse rugs from £86.95.

What counts as a mediumweight turnout, and when does my horse need one?
Mediumweight turnouts carry roughly 150g to 250g of insulating fill — the middle ground between an unfilled lightweight and a 300g-plus heavyweight. As a rule of thumb, they suit most horses once temperatures sit in the low single figures, and clipped horses slightly sooner. Every rug on this page is a genuine Horseware turnout: fully waterproof, breathable outer shells designed for horses living out in British weather. Many of the 250g rugs here — the Rhino and Rambo VL models — use Horseware's Vari-Layer construction, which concentrates extra insulation over the back where heat loss is greatest without adding bulk at the shoulder.
Amigo, Rhino or Rambo — which Horseware range should I choose?
All three ranges come from the same maker, so the waterproofing and cut are dependable throughout. The differences are fabric strength, features and price:
- Amigo is the value range — 900-denier and 1200-denier polyester shells that handle normal field life well. The Amigo Ripstop 900D Turnout 200g at £86.95 is our most affordable full-size mediumweight, and the Amigo 1200D Turnout 250g at £155.95 adds a tougher shell and more fill.
- Rhino sits in the middle — a distinctive soft-but-strong outer with Vari-Layer 250g fill. The Rhino Turnout 250g VL is £173.95, the step-up Rhino Plus Turnout 250g VL is £225.95, and the Rhino Hexstop Plus Turnout 250g VL at £251.95 brings a hexagonal ripstop weave for extra tear resistance.
- Rambo is the flagship — 1680-denier ballistic nylon that shrugs off field wear that would shred lesser rugs. The Rambo 1680D Turnout 250g VL is £316.95 and the Rambo 1680D Plus Turnout 250g VL is £381.95.

What do 900D, 1200D and 1680D actually mean?
The "D" stands for denier — a measure of the thickness of the yarn in the outer shell. Higher numbers mean a heavier, more tear-resistant fabric. A 900-denier shell like the Amigo Ripstop is fine for most horses in normal paddocks; 1200 denier adds a comfortable safety margin; and Rambo's 1680-denier ballistic nylon is aimed at horses that play hard, live out in groups, or destroy anything less. Ripstop and Hexstop weaves add a reinforcing grid so a small nick stays a small nick rather than running into a long tear.
What about ponies, cobs and youngstock?
Small sizes are well covered here. The Amigo Ripstop 900D range runs right down through Pony (£86.95), Petite (£68.95) and Foal (£73.95) turnouts in 200g, while the Rhino Pony Turnout 250g VL (£155.95), Rhino Plus Pony 250g VL (£207.95) and Rhino Hexstop Plus Pony 250g VL (£233.95) bring the pony sizes up to full Rhino specification. For bigger builds, the Amigo 1200D XL Turnout 250g (£173.95) and the Wug-neck models give a roomier cut through the shoulder and neck.
Do I need a matching neck cover?
Several rugs here are "Wug" designs with a high-cut neck built in for extra coverage. If you want detachable neck coverage instead, the Amigo 1200D Turnout Hood 150g is £59.95, the Amigo Ripstop 900D Turnout Hood 150g is £42.95, and the Rambo Optimo Turnout Hood 150g is £83.95 — check your rug's attachment style matches before ordering, and if you are not sure, get in touch and our team will help.
Horseware Mediumweight Turnout FAQs
What temperature is a mediumweight turnout rug for?
As a general guide, a 150g–250g mediumweight suits most horses when temperatures sit roughly between 0°C and 10°C, with clipped horses needing it at the warmer end of that range and hardy natives at the colder end. Always judge by your own horse — age, clip, shelter and condition all shift the answer.
What is the difference between Amigo, Rhino and Rambo?
They are Horseware's three tiers. Amigo is the value range with 900D–1200D shells (from £86.95 full-size in stock here), Rhino is the mid-tier with a soft, strong outer and Vari-Layer fill (full-size from £173.95), and Rambo is the flagship with a 1680D ballistic nylon shell (the Rambo 1680D Turnout 250g VL is £316.95). Waterproofing is dependable across all three — you are mainly paying for durability and features.
How do I measure my horse for a Horseware turnout?
Measure from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock, and match that length to the rug size in feet and inches. Horseware rugs on this page run from 2ft 9 petite sizes up to 7ft 3, so there is a fit for everything from foals to heavyweight hunters. If you are between sizes or unsure, get in touch and our team will help.
What does VL or Vari-Layer mean on Rhino and Rambo rugs?
Vari-Layer is Horseware's layered fill construction: extra insulation is concentrated over the back and quarters where horses lose most heat, while the sides stay less bulky. The result is a rug that keeps more warmth in for its stated fill weight, which is why a 250g VL rug can feel warmer than a standard 250g.
Do Horseware mediumweights come in pony sizes?
Yes. The Rhino Pony Turnout 250g VL (£155.95) covers 3ft 9 to 5ft 9, and the Amigo Ripstop 900D range includes Pony (£86.95), Petite (£68.95) and Foal (£73.95) turnouts in 200g, so small equines get the same waterproofing and fit as the full-size rugs.
Is a Rambo turnout worth the extra money?
If your horse is hard on rugs or lives out full time, often yes. The 1680-denier ballistic nylon shell on rugs like the Rambo 1680D Turnout 250g VL (£316.95) resists tears far better than lighter fabrics, so one Rambo can outlast several cheaper rugs. For horses that are gentle on their wardrobe, an Amigo or Rhino usually does the job for less.
