What is the difference between a waterproof riding coat and a soft shell jacket?
A waterproof coat is built to keep rain out. That is its main job, so the outer fabric is sealed and the cut is longer to cover you in the saddle. A soft shell is a warmth-and-wind layer with a softer handle: comfortable, easy to move in, and fine in a light shower, but it is not the layer you want for a two-hour hack in steady rain.
If you only buy one, buy the waterproof. If you already own a waterproof and find yourself too hot in it nine months of the year, the soft shell is the piece that fills the gap.
Can you ride in both?
Yes. The Amelie is designed as a riding coat, so the length and cut are meant for sitting in the saddle rather than standing at the ringside. The Celine is a shorter, fitted soft shell, so it will not bunch under you in the saddle and layers easily under a coat.
How should a LeMieux ladies' jacket fit?
Aim for enough room to get a fleece or thick base layer underneath without the sleeves pulling when you take up the reins. Sit down and put your arms forward as if you were holding the reins before you decide: a jacket that feels perfect standing still can feel tight in the riding position.
If you are between two UK sizes, size up for the waterproof coat, which is usually worn over other layers. For the soft shell, most riders prefer their normal size for a closer, less bulky fit.
What about layering underneath?
A thin base layer next to the skin, a fleece or the soft shell in the middle, and the waterproof on top is the combination most riders end up with. It lets you drop a layer as you warm up rather than being stuck in one very heavy coat.
How do you look after a waterproof riding coat?
Follow the care label on the garment first. In general, brush mud off when it is dry rather than scrubbing it wet, wash sparingly, and avoid fabric conditioner and harsh detergents, which can affect how the outer fabric sheds water. Hang the coat to dry rather than leaving it screwed up in a tack box or the boot of the car. Treated properly, a good riding coat lasts several seasons.
