What is the difference between jodhpur boots and long riding boots?

Jodhpur boots (also called short riding boots or paddock boots) finish just above the ankle. They are quick to pull on, easy to walk in around the yard, and they work with jodhpurs and half chaps. The Toggi Ottowa, Augusta, Suffolk and Barrington are all short boots of this type.

Long riding boots come up to just below the knee and give you a continuous, close contact leg against the saddle, which is why they are the usual choice for showing and competition. The Toggi Calgary and Calgary Pro are the adult long boots here; the Carlton is the children's version.

Do I need half chaps with jodhpur boots?

Most riders pair short boots with half chaps. The short boot alone is fine for hacking about the yard and for lessons where the rules allow it, but half chaps add grip and stop the stirrup leather rubbing your calf. If you ride mainly in short boots, budgeting for a pair of half chaps at the same time is sensible.

Which Toggi boots work for yard work as well as riding?

Short boots are the more practical all-rounder if you are mucking out, leading and riding in the same session — you can walk normally in them and they are quicker on and off. Long boots are more comfortable in the saddle over a longer ride and are the smarter option in the ring.

How do I get the size right?

Toggi boots in this collection are sized two ways. The Ottowa and Augusta ranges use UK sizes (adults UK 4–11, children UK 11–3). The Suffolk, Barrington, Calgary, Calgary Pro, Carlton and Brampton use EU sizes, from EU 28 in the smallest children's fitting up to EU 43 in adults.

What about calf width on long boots?

The Toggi Calgary is offered in a standard calf and a wide calf in every size from EU 36 to EU 43, and the Calgary Pro covers both calf widths across nearly all of that range, so you can match the boot to your leg rather than compromising on the foot size. Measure around the widest part of your calf while wearing the socks and breeches you ride in, and measure with your leg bent as it would be in the saddle.

Should leather riding boots feel tight when new?

Leather boots settle and drop slightly at the ankle with wear, so a new long boot that feels a touch tall and firm is normal. What should not happen is pinching across the toes or pressure on the front of the shin. If either of those is happening, the size is wrong rather than "not broken in yet".

Looking after Toggi leather boots

Two small items in this collection make a real difference to how long a leather boot lasts. The Toggi Boots Tree (£15.96) holds the shape of the boot leg so it does not crease and collapse in storage, and the Toggi Boots Jack (£9.58) lets you pull boots off without wrenching the heel or standing on the counter of the other boot.

Beyond that: let boots dry naturally away from direct heat, brush off mud before it dries hard, and feed the leather occasionally rather than only when it starts to look dry.

Toggi riding boots FAQs

Which Toggi boots are best for everyday riding and yard work?

A short jodhpur boot is the practical everyday choice, because you can ride in it and then walk, muck out and drive home in it. The Toggi Ottowa Adult Jodhpur Boots (UK 4–11, from £65.52) are the entry point for adults, and the Toggi Augusta Adults Jodhpur Boots (UK 4–11, from £76.46) are a slightly smarter option. For children, the Toggi Ottowa Child Jodhpur Boots start from £45.99.

What is the difference between Toggi jodhpur boots and long riding boots?

Jodhpur boots finish just above the ankle and are usually worn with half chaps; they are easier to walk in and quicker to put on. Long riding boots reach just below the knee and give a smooth, close contact leg against the saddle, which is why they are preferred for showing and competition. In this collection the Ottowa, Augusta, Suffolk and Barrington are short boots, while the Calgary, Calgary Pro and Carlton are long boots.

Do Toggi long riding boots come in a wide calf fitting?

Yes. The Toggi Calgary Leather Riding Boots (from £144.62) and the Toggi Calgary Pro Leather Riding Boots (from £158.79) are both available in a standard calf and a wide calf across EU 36–43, in black and cheeko. Measure your calf at its widest point over your riding socks and breeches before choosing.

What sizes do Toggi children's boots come in?

Children's Toggi boots here run from EU 28 in the Toggi Brampton Childs Jodhpur Boots (EU 28–38, from £34.79), which covers the smallest first-boot sizes. The Ottowa and Augusta children's jodhpur boots are UK sized from Childs 11 up to Childs 3 (from £45.99 and £47.99), and the Toggi Carlton Childs Long Riding Boots run EU 33–38 plus EU 41, from £110.61.

How should new Toggi leather boots fit?

They should feel snug rather than tight. Leather drops and softens at the ankle with wear, so a long boot that sits a little high at first is normal and will settle. Pinching across the toes, heel slip that does not improve, or pressure on the shin bone are signs the size or calf width is wrong, not signs that the boot needs breaking in.

What if the size I order is not right?

Boots can be returned within 90 days as long as they are unworn outdoors and in their original packaging, so it is fine to try them on indoors on a clean floor to check the fit. If you are between sizes or unsure about calf width, get in touch and our team will help before you order.
