The Hy Equestrian DefenceX Shield Guardian Evo is a combination summer fly rug with an integrated neck and a matching fly mask, made from a close weave polyester silver mesh with X detailing. It is designed for horses and ponies in summer turnout that need protection from biting insects as well as from harmful UV rays, which the silver mesh reflects to help prevent sunburn and sun bleaching of the coat.

How to Use

1. Measure your horse from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock, and choose the nearest size.
2. Fold the neck back, place the rug over the withers and fasten the chest, then smooth it back into position along the lie of the coat.
3. Fasten the elasticated touch tape neck fastenings so the neck sits snugly without pressing on the crest, and check the ear shaping sits correctly.
4. Secure the belly flap straps so they are close but not tight, then fit the leg straps by linking them through one another between the hind legs.
5. Fit the fly mask last, adjusting it so the mesh sits clear of the eyes and eyelashes.
6. Remove daily to check for rubs, groom underneath and sponge the mesh clean as needed.

Measure from the centre of the chest, along the body, to the point of the buttock, exactly as you would for a turnout rug. If your horse falls between sizes or is broad through the shoulder and barrel, size up so the shoulder gussets and belly flap sit correctly.

Will it rub the mane and shoulders?
Anti-rub lining is fitted at the mane, tail and shoulder area to reduce friction. Check the fit daily and groom underneath, as any rug that is too tight or too loose can rub.

How should I clean it?
Brush off dried mud, then sponge the mesh with cool water and a mild detergent and allow it to dry naturally away from direct heat. Store it clean and dry at the end of the fly season.
